London was a bad coach. Bronco was a replacement level coach. Elliott will be UVa Saban, of course,
Late to the party but here are my thoughts…
Good Bronco
- Bronco Mendenhall as UVA HC was overall a good hire for the University. His tenure had a better outcome than most hires we would have made at the time. (Suck it, Dragon)
- Bronco like all of us is pretty flawed. We’re just not public figures. But I can relate trying to balance career v. quality of life.
- Bronco was a poor fit culturally for UVA (and probably most P5 universities). But he could probably do good elsewhere that either shares his culture or is more malleable.
Bad Bronco
- VT loss and some of the other game management decisions ultimately tarnished some of his legacy. Probably what keeps me from saying it was a great hire for on-the-field results.
- Abruptness of his departure left me pretty salty. Transition year would have been better. But we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.
Summary
Bronco was a good hire. You’re ignoring realities if you don’t think he had better than expected outcomes. The puff piece is a bit obnoxious. I’m malcontented but some of y’all pretend Bronco has the character of Groh.
Let me know how much I owe for this therapy session.
Venmo me $400 and we’ll call it even. You’re welcome.
Shots fired! this is good level headed summary.
Having gone to Virginia what really really matters to me is that our coaches become and remain real Hoos. Gillan is a Hoo. Leitao is not. London is a Hoo. For a coach to tip toe in and out and quit and retire to a couple ranches with Virginia money I am not convinced is a real Hoo.
I dont know football enough to know if he can coach.
My biggest take away from the article is that Bronco should be a HS coach if he’s really buying all the stuff he’s selling.
And Ms. Mendenhall won’t say but she wants her weirdo husband out of the house and keeping her lifestyle financed. That’s why he’s hunting that next P5 job.
Yes! you said it not me!
I will not sit here and allow someone to sully the good name of Coach Groh. Nothing but a gentleman to me, and his sons and I tore it up more than a few times on Elliewood Ave.
As I’ve said before I didn’t bring up any new takes on Bronco today, I have 2 yrs worth of those takes on this board alone. He brought this on himself by putting out that BS puff piece, the night after the Homerun derby in the deadest sporting news week of the summer. He could have stayed on his ranch and went fishing. But he wanted to be the first to put his hat in the ring for a future job to be named.
I am starting to buy into the puff piece/self promotion narrative a bit. It’s now the lead story of ESPN home page. I mean I don’t think anyone in the country was clamoring for a Bronco Mendenhall update so he clearly pulled some strings for the press piece and placement lol
Guess you don’t get out much. Where I’m at, all I hear at the supermarket is “You heard anything about Bronco Mendenhall lately? Wonder what that guy is up to.”
Is your supermarket located inside of a Mormon temple in Salt Lake City?
You need to start shopping at better markets clearly. Or at least get better friends.
I can’t think of a single P5 school that would hire him, not even BYU.
Well, maybe Oregon State or Kansas.
Charlottesville has Ivy inn and Fleurie, nothing beats that
Dude obviously never been to the Applebees on the north side of Lexington KY
D2mn got me rolling over here.
As someone who lived in Blacksburg for a year it is a legitimate culinary catastrophe
That being said, if you find yourself imprisoned there for some reason or another go by “Our Daily Bread.” Both the pastries and food are phenomenal. Everything else is mediocre at best
I can legit say I’ve only eaten in Blacksburg once that was at a Buffalo Wild Wings. My move was always stop at the stop at the Waffle House on 40 just before I got in or after leaving town.
Went to Blacksburg once to go to a concert… ate at the dining hall with a HS friend… missed the concert because I was bolted to the toilet the entire night.
Ahh yea… I have ate in the dining hall a few times during stints at football camp. Only Liberty had worst food. Legit all you could eat at Boys State was the french fries and cereal anything else was a bullet train to the toilet.
