Hoos Going Pro 2022-23 NBA Season

Possible Kerr has legit big plans for Ty being a piece of that roster and the 2wave Warriors?

I watched a warriors podcast and I think there was smoke that the warriors were always interested in Jerome/were surprised he became available this year.

I am betting that Key gets more NBA minutes this year than Mamadi and Ty combined. Of the three he may end up having the longest career…

What holds Diakite back? Feel like he has produced at every stop when he gets his minutes and great locker room guy.

Those Mama-D quick elevations and hitting his shots as he did his last year so. In addition he really has filled out!

Nothing held him back other than a broken hip. He stuck in Milwaukee but tough to get run with Giannis Portis Lopez and then he was a cap casualty

I like watching the Hawks offense said no one ever … like ever … Trae with another 3/17 shooting night with 6 turnovers … dude is a black hole of mediocrity and general terribleness.

Pretty much spot on there. The Hawks have the perfect storm of trouble with him. Generally a fan favorite and capable of gaudy stats and when everything aligns can win with him. But his skill set does not compliment anyone, and he bogs down what’s a pretty decent roster by pounding the rock for 18sec per possession. And because of that and his cap number, he’s near impossible to trade and expect reasonable value in return. Their best hope is he leaves as a FA to chase a ring. Until then the Hawks are stuck and that Eastern Conference Finals in 21 will be the high-water mark of this club.

Trae is the poster boy for the opposite of synergy. The whole is always less than the sum of the parts.

I’m not sure why I have to be the Trae Young defender here, but I think you guys are out ahead a bit. He’s a bit of a lesser Iverson, in some ways. Obvious upside, but can cause problems. But the problems he’s causing are more like, he can make you good, but can prevent you from being one of the best teams in the league (unless everything hits perfectly).

But this is sort of why I’m eager to see the Murray experiment. If you can surround Trae with more weapons (and let’s hope Dre becomes a weapon, too), can he put himself in a better spot, where he gives the upside, and limits the downside?

I don’t know the answer, and there’s plenty of reasons to argue the negative, but I’m not taking one bad preseason game as much of any evidence (yet).

I didn’t make that rant based on last night, I didn’t even know they played last night.

I do agree, I’m hoping that the arrival of Murray will solve some of the issues the Hawks have in terms of flow. I don’t even think Murray needs to be the full time PG just someone who can bring the rock up and start an action 25-30% of the time would be a massive boast. That would give Dre, Bogdanovic, and Collins something to do beside stand on the perimeter get cold and disinterested. The other important piece Murray brings is they finally have a guard interested in playing defense and not relying on the ā€œwelp Capela will clean it up in the paintā€ philosophy.

The Iverson comparison is a good one, I’ve always likened Trae to Harden. An absolute talent, but not sure you can win with him.

Gotcha - I just saw Dave’s 3-17 note.

I don’t need to muddy my rants with facts or reality.

I also don’t believe that Trae is mediocre or terrible. He’s an elite talent, just not one I enjoy watching or want on my team. (See James Harden for another example) There’s a difference there.

Trae is the guy no one wants to play pick up ball with and you want on the other team watching his teammates get frustrated that they are essentially on a treadmill since they don’t see the ball unless Trae gets stuck.
And my general comment is not about one game either … it comes from tuning in to try to watch Hunter get some run and just watch ugly basketball and have to turn it off for my own basketball sanity… it’s why my 2 favorite teams to watch are the Celtics and the Warriors - they play team D and the ball moves.
p.s. - Also been a fan of the Celtics since a kid … but became so watching those 80’s Celtics play beautiful basketball zipping the ball around.

pps … And Trae has limitations too simply because he is small and unathletic who thinks he should shoot a ton of threes as if he’s Curry or Klay … but in reality is a career 35.5% Three Point shooter.
And it compounds because he is one of the 10 worst defenders in the league.

(1) I suspect if you were playing pick-up and Trae showed up, you’d pretty much be like ā€œHoly Sh**, an NBA all-star wants to play hoops with us!ā€, and NOT ā€œOh crap, it’s Trae again, I hear my mom callingā€, and (2) yeah, even given that, I take your point, but NBA hoops is a pro game, not a voluntary hobby you do to de-stress and get some exercise and have some giggles with the buddies.

He’s small, but I wouldn’t say unathletic. He’s not explosive for the NBA, but he’s pretty athletic. But yes, he has limitations. Of course he has limitations.

But the questions all these anti-Trae posts avoid (I suspect because they don’t have answers that buttress the case) are: (1) would the Hawks be better with replacement-level NBA starter PG (A: No, they wouldn’t be a playoff team); (2) can Trae change if he’s surrounded with another high-level NBA perimeter talent (A: let’s all tune in this year and see)

I guess a lot of this is lingering pro-Luka sentiment. I mean, yeah, Luka is better. But Trae is pretty good and it’s too early to say he can’t lead an elite team. (Maybe after this year…)

Interesting points and part of why I think this is so interesting WTF do you do with Trae? I agree the Hawks would take a step back with an average NBA pg. The Hawks supporting cast is avg. to good, but not great. I also think it’s impossible for the Hawks to swap Trae for a similar caliber PG. A trade would yield a net loss and the team will take a dip.

But if we’re being cynical there’s a world where the Hawks run it with Murray at the 1, and be about even. A possible 7-10 seed that maybe everything breaks right for that random 2nd round appearance.

I am curious of Murray and Trae together, there could be enough there to be entertaining. The problem is I don’t think it lets them take the next step. With both in the backcourt they are are a 4/5 seed at best.
