Fair point on coining a better term, but the long form is a player who is all-star good but not all-NBA good, and who makes your roster significantly less flexible both in construction and roles/usage.
FWIW, I think Trae is an amazing talent and the clear #1 option on his team. It’s not particularly close either, but there are clear areas where he can elevate his game (e.g. efficiency, defense, maximizing his gravity, etc.) that would improve his (and the Hawks) standing.
Dre’s <10 ft shooting numbers have been not great, 55% last year which is 23rd percentile in the NBA; mostly a big drop off in the 3-10 ft range. He’s also taken less of his shots from 3 each season. I’m optimistic for him, but I think there are some knocks on how he’s played that aren’t just about health.
Everyone would always say “Cam Reddish looks like a guy who will shoot it really well. He has all the pieces” and then you’d ask “But then why has he never actually shot it well since we’ve seen him competing at a high level?” And somehow people would just ignore that for a long time, haha.
I’ve also always been down on RJ Barrett. He’s done fine/decently well in the NBA so far, but I think he’s the exact level of player that is a trap for a franchise. He’s not good enough to take them anywhere but is good enough they’ll overpay to keep him. He really should be a third option on a good team, but they’re gonna keep him as a first option on a throughly mediocre team for way too long.
I think alot of people do acknowledge he’s awesome and I loved all those series a few years back where it was “Ice Trae” time, but I think we all wished he played a bit more like a point OR had an experienced 2 and 3to help support him. The Hawks are all young so they’ve all had to grow together and that’s why we are not seeing consistency.
Reddit says that the 15th spot will likely stay open for tax purposes and it’s a four way competition now between Ty, Pat Spencer (lax POTY, unimportant but interesting), Jerome Robinson (BC), and Anthony Lamb
The only reason the Hawks were even in that position was that Ben Simmons had an epic meltdown vs the Hawks. If Simmons had dunked that ball over Trae, what would the Hawks/Trae even have to point to for future hope?
Always interesting to see the minimum salaries every year… two-way contract is exactly 50% of the rookie minimum…
So if you just made “minimum wage” in the NBA, you get ~7% raise every year after a rookie bump… not bad if there was a guarantee you could make rosters every year like that…
Little late to this but I’ll join Haney in some Trae defense. For all of the black hole comments, Trae has basically been an elite offense unto himself the past 2 years. Hawks were 2nd in the NBA in offensive rating and that number has always dived when Trae is off the floor.
You can definitely lump him in with the reasons they’ve been bad defensively but offensively he’s one of the top 5-10 players in the NBA (by offensive EPM he was 2nd in the NBA only behind Jokic).
I do think they need to be more diverse offensively and defensively if they want to reach championship level but he’s the reason that team is even relevant in the East tbh
