I agree totally that the skill level in the NBA is at an all time high, nearly every player on the floor can shoot it, but I do feel like not everyone shoots it so efficiently that if you moved the line back that it would still make mathematical sense for so many guys to continue on shooting it. They’d have to find other ways to score and affect the game.

Eh, idk about that. Wasn’t necessarily my intention to create a convo about comparing eras, but great players are great in any era. The rules and the way the game is played is so different now than then, it’s almost like it’s a completely different game.
But c’mon, drop a prime KD in the 80s and 90s and the result is the same: who’s guarding that? When he’s on, you’re at his mercy, doesn’t matter what era.

What is the general consensus on 4-point circles like in the Big-3?

I’d prefer they go all in like @DavetheWave mentioned and make it a 4 over the 4 pt circles.
Another change I’d love but will never see is expand the floor size. Take out the first cple rows widen everything by 3-4 feet

Sorry if my sarcasm isn’t clear. I think the game is better today than it was back then. Just like in all the other sports I mentioned. The advancements in early age skill development + fitness, nutrition, and recovery has unlocked new levels of athletic achievement across the board. 100% agree the greats could play in any era and still be great. But the average 4-7 guys in the rotation of playoff teams are much more skilled, athletic, or both than 30 years ago

That’s interesting… then you would eliminate the short corner 3s… it would make offenses have to change up having two dudes camp in the corners waiting to get open.

That would be the hope pull everything out and open maybe create some more space inside to encourage cuts to the rim.

This is maybe the most important difference between NBA eras for me. The greats are still the greats but even though he could have phrased it more delicately, JJ Redick calling rotation players of the past “plumbers and firemen” was essentially correct, at least in spirit

Yes - I’ve mentioned that before as well … would improve spacing for the bigs and no cheapo threes … it’s literally shorter than the college three.

This is my issue. I still really enjoy NBA playoff basketball and have been way less of an NBA hater than many. But when I tune into normal mid-week regular season games, 85% of the time it just seems like they’re not taking it that seriously. Just dudes playing and getting shots up - a lot of running yet often very little intensity.
Like, I watch these guys in the playoffs - I know they can go full effort on defense and defend way better than this. I know these teams can play the highest level of basketball on earth and make super interesting schematic adjustments. But too much of the regular season feels nowhere near that. Individual games just don’t matter enough and too many teams have an incentive to purposefully suck.
