Maryland: “I think they’re getting solid looks but they’re just not knocking down shots at the clip they want to. I like being a guard and seeing how Jahmir (Young) and Deshawn (Harris-Smith) initiate the offense and make plays for themselves and others.”

A tasteful understatement by the young fellow when describing a team that is here on the 3P% ranking:

Seems that initial reports I had seen of him being limited athletically and primarily just a very good shooter were not entirely accurate. I was not in favor of offering him and looking forward to being very wrong.

Certainly reports we’ve had since we received his commitment have been very encouraging.

Oh Id say Sharma is still pretty limited athletically (relatively) in terms of explosiveness. But he’s actually pretty quick and mobile.

I guess this is one of those things that is subject to interpretation. When I think “limited athletically” I am referring to someone who is lacks quickness, lateral movement, etc. I’m thinking someone who is going to struggle defending at the college level because he can’t move well enough. “Athletic,” in my view, starts somewhere way below Ryan Dunn and Elijah Gertrude.

For me, if you’re a highly skilled player, you can be a quality contributor if you’re sufficiently athletic to defend your position.

If you tell me Sharma can defend his position adequately, then I’m OK with him. My biggest beef was that what we needed on the wing is not another “good” player but an alpha point getter who when we are stinking on offense we give him the ball. Otherwise, I didn’t see the need for another wing. But, who knows what attrition might occur by the time he gets to Charlottesville.

Got it.

My lens for being “athletic” is being able to attack the rim. Definitely dont think that will be an immediate strength of his and hasn’t really shown the craftiness Jerome or Rohde do at times.

But I still do like the addition as well. If he can give us a woldo presence off the bench that’s money. And anything else is huge

“is a great lateral defender as a big guard”

Assuming that Sharma can hold his own defensively, there are likely opportunities to run him off screens in search of open 3’s … ideally assisted by “athletic” backcourt mates with complementary skillsets.

It’s hard to define, isn’t it? Your comment made me think, well, Ty was pretty good at attacking the rim and I don’t think anyone would consider him “athletic.” It’s really a slippery thing to define when you’re trying to apply on court performance.

Ty was really smart. He knew what his strengths and weaknesses were and played to fit those. If Sharma can do similarly with his shooting abilities he can be compliment to our athletic guys.

“I like family, so I want to go to a program that is family-oriented and has a family atmosphere. No bad blood in the locker room. I want to play in a play style that fits me too. I’m a point guard who likes to run fast, get in transition, make shots, and make plays with the ball in my hand.”

Maybe fade this bet…

For some reason, I don’t think he is coming here. I think if he really wanted to be here he wills gave committed by now. But hoo knows.

I feel like a lot of kids say that and still end up here. Not worried yet

I feel like we go through a cycle of over analyzing that exact quote with every single kid we recruit haha.

If you ask almost any high school player how they want to play, they’ll say they want to play fast and score in transition. Because it’s fun. It’s what everyone wants! But saying that doesn’t seem to have a ton of correlation with where dudes ultimately end up choosing to go, at least based on what I can recall.

I feel that we do get a lot of guys who say that, but the attrition rate of guys who say that is higher than guys who don’t say that.

That’s okay, we’ll redshirt him and deprogram him

Timeline worries me a bit. He mentions next Fall but believe HGN said things could change after Spring if not committed by then.

I really don’t even read recruiting articles anymore. I skim for hard facts, that’s it. And for UVA mentions, only to decide whether to share. Not saying you can’t get something out of the quotes and all but it’s usually pretty meaningless.

Standard operating procedure. And I’m sure that’s truthful. What recruits don’t realize at this stage is they don’t really get to decide when they decide…coaches do.
