Maryland: âI think theyâre getting solid looks but theyâre just not knocking down shots at the clip they want to. I like being a guard and seeing how Jahmir (Young) and Deshawn (Harris-Smith) initiate the offense and make plays for themselves and others.â
A tasteful understatement by the young fellow when describing a team that is here on the 3P% ranking:
3:20 recruiting talk. Mature answer about what heâs looking for. Cam Gillus the kid who went to lehigh but almost walked on here at UVA
Seems that initial reports I had seen of him being limited athletically and primarily just a very good shooter were not entirely accurate. I was not in favor of offering him and looking forward to being very wrong.
Certainly reports weâve had since we received his commitment have been very encouraging.
Oh Id say Sharma is still pretty limited athletically (relatively) in terms of explosiveness. But heâs actually pretty quick and mobile.
I guess this is one of those things that is subject to interpretation. When I think âlimited athleticallyâ I am referring to someone who is lacks quickness, lateral movement, etc. Iâm thinking someone who is going to struggle defending at the college level because he canât move well enough. âAthletic,â in my view, starts somewhere way below Ryan Dunn and Elijah Gertrude.
For me, if youâre a highly skilled player, you can be a quality contributor if youâre sufficiently athletic to defend your position.
If you tell me Sharma can defend his position adequately, then Iâm OK with him. My biggest beef was that what we needed on the wing is not another âgoodâ player but an alpha point getter who when we are stinking on offense we give him the ball. Otherwise, I didnât see the need for another wing. But, who knows what attrition might occur by the time he gets to Charlottesville.
Got it.
My lens for being âathleticâ is being able to attack the rim. Definitely dont think that will be an immediate strength of his and hasnât really shown the craftiness Jerome or Rohde do at times.
But I still do like the addition as well. If he can give us a woldo presence off the bench thatâs money. And anything else is huge
âis a great lateral defender as a big guardâ
Assuming that Sharma can hold his own defensively, there are likely opportunities to run him off screens in search of open 3âs ⌠ideally assisted by âathleticâ backcourt mates with complementary skillsets.
Itâs hard to define, isnât it? Your comment made me think, well, Ty was pretty good at attacking the rim and I donât think anyone would consider him âathletic.â Itâs really a slippery thing to define when youâre trying to apply on court performance.
Ty was really smart. He knew what his strengths and weaknesses were and played to fit those. If Sharma can do similarly with his shooting abilities he can be compliment to our athletic guys.
âI like family, so I want to go to a program that is family-oriented and has a family atmosphere. No bad blood in the locker room. I want to play in a play style that fits me too. Iâm a point guard who likes to run fast, get in transition, make shots, and make plays with the ball in my hand.â
Maybe fade this betâŚ
For some reason, I donât think he is coming here. I think if he really wanted to be here he wills gave committed by now. But hoo knows.
I feel like a lot of kids say that and still end up here. Not worried yet
I feel like we go through a cycle of over analyzing that exact quote with every single kid we recruit haha.
If you ask almost any high school player how they want to play, theyâll say they want to play fast and score in transition. Because itâs fun. Itâs what everyone wants! But saying that doesnât seem to have a ton of correlation with where dudes ultimately end up choosing to go, at least based on what I can recall.
I feel that we do get a lot of guys who say that, but the attrition rate of guys who say that is higher than guys who donât say that.
Thatâs okay, weâll redshirt him and deprogram him
Timeline worries me a bit. He mentions next Fall but believe HGN said things could change after Spring if not committed by then.
I really donât even read recruiting articles anymore. I skim for hard facts, thatâs it. And for UVA mentions, only to decide whether to share. Not saying you canât get something out of the quotes and all but itâs usually pretty meaningless.
Standard operating procedure. And Iâm sure thatâs truthful. What recruits donât realize at this stage is they donât really get to decide when they decideâŚcoaches do.
