Kyle Guy committed in October of his junior year. Ty Jerome committed in September of his junior year. When you know, you know.
Okay. You named literally 2 guys, lol.
Ty Jerome had 0 other P5 offers.
And yes McKneely committed early too.
Bennett used to push really hard to get guys to commit from the get go. Mark has told the story of sitting in TB’s office on their unofficial visit…TB made his presentation then turned and said okay I’m ready for your commitment now lol They were shocked. Those early visits are just all fun and games, nobody does that.
It backfired doing that with some other guys though…and just attitudes have changed with the times, what’s acceptable. So yeah they don’t really do stuff like that anymore.
Tangent, but what a calendar year 2014 was for uva hoops! We won the ACC outright (regular and Tourney). We got a 1-seed. We got to play in the Sweet 16 in MSG. We lost only 3 games all year!
And Ty and Kyle both committed, laying the groundwork for the natty.
2019 was pretty good, I guess, but there were some rough games in November and December.
Other than Tony botching the lineups all year
He got it right when it mattered.
I’m just saying those were guys that completely bought into Tony Bennett and UVA and knew early on they found what they wanted. Mallory is from Charlottesville, goes to school less than a mile from JPJ, and his teammate is a UVA coach. What more does he need to know about the program? For whatever reason he’s not sold.
The world has changed a lot since then. In particular, a high school junior has far less visibility into the roster situation they might be walking into their freshman year. Mallory should hit the bid anyway, but in general I think good high schoolers should wait as long as possible.
Instead he seems to be smartly short the put…
If a high school recruit sees himself as a foundational piece, then he should commit as early as possible to a program. That allows the coaching staff to recruit around him and put an actual good team together with high-quality recruits that fit together. That’s one of the reasons, Kyle guy and Ty Jerome committing early helped put that team together so well.
Also allows the recruit to recruit as well like Kyle guy did a bunch
That’s how I see it too. And there’s so much turnover nowadays, waiting to see how it will turn out is a fool’s errand.
UVa is a great fit for him, your POV on the kid, notwithstanding.
Maybe he will go to UConn and take them out of the London Jemison race.
I like the way you think.
No they mentioned Duke, if they want him and we want him he’ll go to Duke 99 out of 100 times. We have about 85+ times(After Coleman, Keels, Power, Kon and many more on the list prior) to go before we get our guy.(Preface it would have to be someone that’s related to a coach on the staff at that time)
Kon killed it for me. If ever there was a TB 5 star to pick us over Duke … he was the 1 out of 100.
It’s 0 out of 100.
Who’s the 1?
