Seniors who are already committed don’t play in AAU. Only guys looking for a last second scholarship. Our three 2022 guys will show up on grounds next June when the rest of the players do (unless one ends up good enough to make team USA for whichever tournament is next summer).

I may be wrong but I remember Guy had a *good 1st year here, and showed alot of midrange ability right out of the gate when he was forced to drive off of the 3 point line. I don’t remember him struggling as much as people like to continue to say he did?
Guy’s 2-point field goal percentage wasn’t great as a freshman:
Wasn’t trying to say that I2 is as good as Chet, just that if he ends up being 6’10" or taller, it’s a different evaluation for him than if he’s a 6’8" forward. Traudt clearly isn’t the rim protector Chet is, but the limited clips I’ve of their handles don’t scream that he’s that much better than I2 in that area. Shooting-wise, they both look very similar. Agree that I2 will have to develop an attitude because Chet does have that.

Mostly, I remember Guy’s consistency and playing time varying wildly the last third of the season, culminating in 0 for 12 against ND and Florida in the final ACC and NCAA tournament games. To be fair, Guy was a very good player his first year, though not the superstar he became by his third year. And the more reasonable expectation for Traudt is that he’ll follow that same development curve.

Thanks Unknown- honestly I don’t remember any of his *bad games lol, as the *team always seemed to grow and play better as their first season went on. I guess I wasn’t *expecting him to be a 1st round talent his first year, and b/c of such a big class I expected them all to grow over time, so I didn’t “call them out” at the time for having bad games. From their second to third year we won 95% of our games so there wasn’t alot of time for me to reflect on their *poor play lol!
I seemed to remember early in his career someone saying he only planned to stay 2 years and thinking that was ridiculous. When he left I was disappointed but felt he had nothing left to prove by returning even though looking back the Morsell story might have been different if he started as Guy’s backup his first year. So many of these players just got so much better under TB. I think the 2022 class really understands that.
Unrelated but I just want to say that I occasionally go over to DBR and always quite like it.
They cover the rest of the ACC quite well and even the boards normally have good discussions as well.

Traudt will contribute as a freshman, probably even have some big games. He’s not going to step in and be a featured player though, probably more of a guy off the bench who gets 15-20 mpg.
Developing a mid post game is going to be huge for him. He hasn’t been asked to do much of that. Get him isolated where he can go to work in those spots like we did with Hauser or Hunter, that’ll be his bread and butter. Like those guys, he’s very skilled but at his size not quick or explosive enough to get to the rim from the 3 point line against a set defense. That’s the difference between him and a Holmgren offensively. Right now he can be bulled by physical bigs too, saw that occasionally this summer.

Guy 1st year… huh? Guy made 20 of his 1st 36 3 point attempts in his first 12 games as a collegian.

Hmm. I suppose that means the current tea leaves suggest Gardner sticking around (along with Clark), otherwise its hard to see who is taking the other 25 minutes at the 4.
There are plenty of options.
Shedrick at the 4 for short bursts of twin towers with Papi.
Milicic at the 4.
Bond has claimed he could play small ball 4.
Also - I’m not concerned about Traudt’s or anyone’s full season averages per game. I’m much more interested in how many minutes per game he is playing by March.
Who knows? I’ve been following UVa basketball for over half a century. I have seen highly touted recruits arrive on the Grounds and never make an impact. I have seen players who were virtually unknown prior to their donning of Virginia uniforms become stars almost immediately. It’s all a crap shoot. I have high hopes for the contributions of young Mr. Traudt, but I have a suspicion that there are a few fans who are entertaining unrealistic expectations of him, but they are the same ones who are easily enamoured by shiny new toys, and too soon forget those of yesteryear. That said, it’s all good. These are the good ol’ days!

Well, right, but it was in the context of Traudt coming off the bench despite Gardner being gone. Sure, Shedrick or Bond might win the starting 4 spot in '22, its not impossible. But it’d be a weird team and probably isn’t something the coaching staff would plan on.
Milicic winning the starting job is possible, and would probably be a good sign for the team.
Milicic will be written in permanent marker in next year’s starting rotation.
