Italy Trip

Taine train possibly starting to derail…

I count 6 made threes in the player stats, not 5? So there’s three more points they didn’t give us. Italian math.

Thanks for these stats!

Duomo steps in the morning because Armaan took zero threes, and Isaac M only took 4. We didn’t take NEARLY enough threes to have a chance in that game. This is fixable. Yes, I’m serious.

Yeah especially with Reece taking only 1

2 is less than 3, in Cville, Rapallo, Portofino, Florence, Rome, Chapel Hill, and Durham, and it seems to me that our approach to a game should reflect that.

Isaac M needs to keep shooting until he gets his % down to 40%. Leave the gaudy % for his coach. :joy:

Well, you’re braver than me! My brother is constantly banging on me to pace him for the Leadville or Hardrock, but he wants me to pace him for 25 miles–just short of a regular marathon. Never done it, and never will!

Incredible live stat keeping for a guy just trying to enjoy the game!

Comes out to 70 possessions. Edit: Nope 76, forgot to add the FTs. Probably a few more, can’t expect Rush to record every missed FG or offensive board. So eww they got lit up.

I just got this … my brain is like a slow moving locomotive.

Please tell me we played both halves on the bent rim side

Whoops… the Leadville… haven’t lived in Colorado since 2004… guess I got the pass confused with the race.

Deep take

Some back of the envelope math:

  • Last year, our 3PA/FGA was 29.9%, for 340th in the country (out of 358 or so).
  • Tonight was even lower, at 28.1%.
  • We should get that higher. Everyone needs to shoot more. If Shed is making them, take more! Etc.

Thoughts on the game:

  1. There was a much bigger crowd than previous games. At one point 30 Italian teenagers showed up as a group, and they chanted DE-FENCE when we were on D in the second half, so either they were rooting for us or just a close game as neutrals. There were probably 150 fans total at the game.

  2. Mega was taller than us on average by a little; we were stronger and more athletic. They beat us because they consistently attacked our defense productively to get themselves good looks, they shot great, and they killed us on our defensive glass.

I am of average bball IQ for a UVA fan, so I can’t tell you exactly what they were exploiting, but they were moving the ball very quickly. It reminded me of a kenpom tweet this week that he thinks international players develop quicker than Americans because they play a 24s clock their whole lives and learn to make quick decisions on offense. No idea if he’s right, but these guys whipped the ball around and consistently got open 3s or mismatches down low, like where Taine would be on a 6’10" guy.

On the negative side for them, we also hit the offensive glass well, and they turned it over a lot. I think they cool off a bit tomorrow, so even with a worse UVA team, I think we will keep it closer and maybe win.

  1. I don’t think coach was coaching to win this game. He just wanted everyone to get experience. When it’s a real game, we saw how much he rode his perceived top players. But this game, he rarely played Beeks and Kihei together. He played everyone about equal minutes.

  2. Kihei had some great takes, he had a puzzling turnover, he had several great dimes for Shed dunks. Basically what you expect from Kihei.

  3. Beeks had a ton of steals and some great dimes, also mostly to Shedrick. He hit an open 3. Basically what you expect from Beeks.

  4. Armaan was really off for most of the game. I think he started 0/5 and then made his last two FGA.

  5. BVP was really, really off all game although in fairness both his TOs were travels that his dad and our bench didn’t like. Maybe they aren’t travels in the US.

  6. Shedrick had 11 first quarter points. Almost all his points were being in the right place at the right time for a Kihei or Beeks dish when they drew a double team taking it to the basket and him slamming it home. On the one hand, you can say he just did the easy part, but he gets those points so much more consistently than Papi, so it must not be so easy. He also was a beast on the glass with 12 reb including 5 OR including two on one possession. He had two amazing blocks including one where he basically put two hands above the ball and pulled it down. He had another that was called goal tending that looked clean to me. He even made an open 3 like he has been practicing in shoot around! Let’s get this Shedrick all season please.

  7. Gardner looked great to start with some nice quick takes off his post catches that led to layups for him or passes to wide open teammates. He faded a little bit after that and his numbers are kind of typical Gardner-- ok points but not very efficient.

  8. McKneely was assertive. He was looking to drive. He was looking to shoot. I loved it. The contrast between his offensive skills and confidence and those of Dunn and Bond is massive. McKneely is ready to contribute on offense now in the half court, and those guys aren’t. He doesn’t always make the right decision, but the skills and confidence are there and will only grow. I am all aboard the McKneely bandwagon.

  9. I was also really impressed by Murray’s assertiveness. His best play was an offensive rebound and put back and-1 after Beeks made an ill-advised oop attempt to Shedrick in transition that the big guy couldn’t lay in. The question with Murrary for me is his shooting. Last year he was 34.8% on 3s (sample size 23). For the Tall Blacks he didn’t shoot well, and today he was 1-7 on 3s. Maybe it’s just because he’s from the Antipodes but I am getting Stattmann (or Nolte) vibes of a supposed shooter who just never shows that in games. I hope I am wrong because I think he gets minutes if we have a nine-man rotation this year, and I like a lot of things he does, but he has to make his shots.

  10. Papi had foul trouble, finished with 4, and didn’t do much out there. 4 points, 1 rebound. Hoping he bounces back tomorrow.

  11. Coleman DNP

  12. After the game I rushed out for a kebab and then came back to they gym as players filtered out of the locker room. I got Papi to sign a pic of us in Crete during the u-19 FIBA Worlds. I asked him where he wants to play next year, and he said Europe. I asked if he has an Italian passport like a lot of Argentines do, and he said Covid delayed it but he hopes to have it by next season. That would make playing in Europe a little easier.

I got Kihei to sign my Natty ticket and asked why he decided to come back for year 5. He said his goal is to play in the NBA and he thought another year at UVA gave him the best chance to improve to do that. He also says we have more winning to do this year.

I got a picture with future NBA all star Isaac Traudt. He was gracious, but quiet.

I ran into Coach(!) Wilkins and said he was a favorite of mine and thanks for teaching the bigs what he knows. As we were talking, Papi walks by and says in Spanish that Zay married an Argentine. I switched to Spanish, and Zay kept right up. Very cool! He said he met her at UVA.

Just give Giuseppe Chianti -7 pts and we are all good

Correct, 6/19 edited. I had written 5/18 without seeing Shed’s 1. Hey I have us for 73 points!

I think I got all the missed FG and offensive boards. The only things I think I missed were some fouls (which I didn’t even include here) and some DR. I also couldn’t keep up with subs so I abandoned trying to keep minutes and +/-.

My original comment said something about having points wrong but I just added them wrong. The stats I posted do sum to our 73 points.

Both rims were a little higher in the front than the back. Didn’t seem to affect the other team (or us)
