⛹ Jalen Warley - Official Thread

Seems pretty easy to get Warley 20 min if you take them from everyone on that list. And frankly I’m not sure that Rohde/Sharma need any minutes

I think you are looking at a 5-6 guard rotation of Perry McKneely Warley Gertrude Bliss Taine, with Warley possibly fulfilling Tony’s life long dream of 4 ball handlers on the floor if Warley slides to the 4 at times.

Trust me I wasnt as enthusiastic with the add and still and just talking it up, but he is a good athlete, a playmaker, and a proven acc player. Which is something none of our recent transfers have been.

It’s also not that he’s a bad 3pt shooter, it’s that he doesn’t even look to shoot them LOL like he doesn’t even entertain the “Oh Im open? Let me shoot it slowly and hesitantly”, he straight up drives at even sagging defenders which I appreciate given our lack of downhill-ness the last few teams. Dude was actually 9-20 from 3 in acc play the year before.

Ideally he is either our Leaky Black point forward at the 3/4 or an ethan morton veteran presence off the bench for the young guys. Knowing Tony’s habits we pray its the former. PRAY I TELL YOU

Imagining a scenario where Perry (:crossed_fingers:t3:), Gertrude, and Warley play together and they’re all switchable on defense and offense — and all can score on the bounce or on back cuts or on crossover stepbacks.

This was missing from Dunn’s game last year. Dunno if it’s lack of ability, lack of confidence, or lack of empowerment.

I know there are some things Warley can’t do (shoot), but there are something things (penetrate, pass, defend) that he certainly can. After watching us last season, I’ll take a guy he can clearly do some things. Pair Warley with a shooter and now you’re cooking.

I don’t generally like 1 year transfers but we literally have no rising 4th years next year, right?

I know we’re all traumatized by last year’s offense. But what do we gain scoring 20 more points a game if we’re also going to give up 20 more? Y’all are acting like defense doesn’t matter, and our defense is going to struggle next year. We’re losing our two best defensive players, and we don’t have a single proven defender returning. We don’t have anyone who can guard a big wing on the perimeter. You think adding a few shooters is going to hide that? You think it doesn’t matter?

Not to mention: You really think the key to a high-powered offense is relying on two point guards who don’t have a single college game of experience between them? And who, by the way, may or may not be great shooters themselves?

Warley gives us a veteran who can defend the ball, who can switch 1-4, who can handle the ball and create shots for others. Fills a lot of needs.

Yeah, he’s not a great shooter. But instead of complaining about everything, how about looking at what a guy CAN give us, rather than what he can’t?

THIS^^^ Think Tony sees what he has in Rhode and knows he needs an upgrade. Warley will also provide more “small” lineup options.

People have spent years complaining about Virginia having small guards that opponents can just shoot over. Now Warley comes in and people are complaining that he can’t shoot or that he is gonna block Eli’s path to playing time.

The whining about people ‘complaining’ is more annoying than the actual people complaining lol.

People are allowed to bitch and moan if they want to so long as it actually adds to the convo and isn’t just “Tony bad, we suck”. I understand the want for some more positivity but this is a forum, we’re here to discuss thoughts from both sides.

Yeah when a 6-7 guy drives, a big man can’t just park in the paint and raise his arms like they did against Harris and Kihei

I think the complaints about complaining often miss that it’s two groups.

I guess I’m one of the people complaining about the Warley add.

I’ve never complained about small guards, and I’m generally one of the biggest optimists around about the state of the program, CTB, our results, etc.

So yes no matter what happens, someone complains, but not always the same someone.

Exactly. Helps ease the loss on defensive end of Beekman and Dunn. And I think he’ll shoot better than he has. I mean he shot like 79% from the FT line from Jan. 1 on (72% for season I believe). So form isn’t broken.

The complaining hasn’t even been that bad. We all see things differently but I don’t see any trolls out

This is the key, I think: To look at Warley as a useful piece who gives us versatility and plugs some holes, rather than as the guy who is going to change our fortunes. We need other players with other skills. But Warley helps.

As succinct a description of this board as I’ve seen yet!

Will say that for the people looking for proven P5 talent over taking a chance on a mid major player, this is the type of guy that fits the bill.
