Most of Wright’s big accomplishments happened in the last 7 years, when he was older than Bennett is now. Bennett’s just entering the phase where a lot of great coaches really make their mark.
Here’s the effect that Jay Wright’s retirement has had on my thinking as to when Tony will retire: Zero. No effect at all.
I didn’t know when Tony would retire 24 hours ago, and I don’t know when Tony will retire now. Heck, does Tony know? My guess would be no.
But more importantly, when can I retire?
Part of me thinks Williford knows he’s next in line and that’s why he hasn’t left to be a head coach
Once you get to 59 1/2 you get to spend your 401K dollars penalty free … that’s what Jay was waiting for…
I don’t think he would turn down the $$$ of a high level P5 job, but it’s smart to avoid those mediocre programs with a % of failure that could just derail your coaching career. And now the benefit of outlasting McKay and Sanchez is that he’s the last man standing. Those guys had ties to bennett but not uva, williford now is part of the Bennett tree + has uva ties.
I’m sorry, I must have missed something: Why are we talking about who’s replacing Tony? Unless Tony is retiring this year, the list of available and desirable coaches is going to be much different when he leaves than it is now. Do we really want the hot coach of 2022 to be the guy we hire in 2027?
I hope he sees this as a MAJOR opportunity pull in some DMV players now, and PHILLY players that now want to head to a NICE campus down in Central Virginia!
My guess is that something happened behind the scenes and he got pushed out. What that was, I’m sure we’ll find out in the next week.
I agree that seems fishy, but when I have left jobs in the past, I worked twice as hard the last few weeks trying to make sure everything was ready for a smooth transition to the new person.
He wasn’t recruiting the first weekend. Complete opposite. He even canceled two visits that were supposed to happen. Nova fans thought his lack of activity meant he was mulling over an NBA job originally.
He told people he was retiring before the final 4.
There was also this Freudian slip of sorts, seems like he had made up his mind by the Final Four
LOL
Also people were suspicious at how over emotional Jay was both for Jermaine Samuels and Justin Moore after their elite 8 game.
There is no world where Jay Wright gets pushed out at Villanova . He was sick of all the changes and how it has affected college basketball and i am too. .But nobody would ever try to push him out.
Because we don’t have any new transfer targets emerging and there’s nothing else to talk about lol
Right?
I would correct that slightly - we don’t have any new transfer targets emerging (that we know of). I don’t know crap but HGN has spoken of stealth visits in the past.
I want to retire at the same age or younger than Jay Wright did.
If it makes you guys feel any better, I’m 58 and retired…
Health insurance?
That’s the best part. My wife still works—and keeps me in the manner to which I’m accustomed!
