⛹ Johann Grünloh Official Thread

No - he’s a wing.
He played the 4 because unfortunately Murphy got the waiver the day before the season … Murphy couldn’t guard 4’s so it pushed Hauser down to the 4 a ton - would have been better to leave McKoy as the starter at the 4 and then Murphy without the waiver would have been a huge help in 2022 after a redshirt.
2022 - McKoy as the starter at the 4 after a whole season of experience and Murphy at the 3.

That’s your opinion, but it wasn’t Bennett’s.

You can always tell what Bennett’s definition of a player was based on the roster listing.

Wilkins, McKoy, Hauser — forwards.

Hunter, Key, Murphy — guards.

He listed guys he thought were wings as guards. Guys playing primarily 4 were listed as forwards.

Also, I never saw Hauser warming up with the guards pre-game. Hunter, Key and Murphy always split their time in pregame warmups between the two groups.

I always saw Hauser as a forward personally. I think he would have played a ton at the 4 beside Woldetensae or Morsell at the 3 even without Murphy.

Hauser – definitely a forward, but maybe not a “big?”

Huff – I’m thinking about Grünloh as an incoming freshman/sophomore… and he would eat absoutely eat freshman/sophomore Jay Huff’s lunch.

Exactly - he’s a 3/4
In the NBA he’s the starter at the 3 when Brown doesn’t start.
A forward and a big are not the same thing. They can be the same thing, but it’s not automatic.
Gill was a four and a big. McCoy was a four and a big Even though he wanted to be a wing.
Key was a four and could go either big or wing.
Hunter was a three in Virginia’s best lineup rotation.

I just spoke with Johann and will have a story coming out on his commitment. From talking to him, it sounds like this process happened really fast. Really enjoyed watching Odoms VCUs teams

Many of us are looking forward to a more entertaining style of play too.

Question I’m not sure I’ve seen answered- is he still considering the draft or fully committed?

He didn’t enter the draft. 2025 NBA Draft Early Entry Candidates

Having reviewed film of Odom’s past teams, Grünloh expressed excitement about the style of play and how it aligns with his game.

“I like how he likes to play fast. I think that fits me really well, too. He likes to run up and down the court and play well in transition. He also loves to have a lot of shooters on the court, which I really like.”

Weird … playing faster attracts recruits…

Is the international game generally slower tempo? I don’t think of Odom’s teams (at least at VCU) as particularly fast. Or did Houston just tell him to say that because the CTB era thread is slowing down.

My take on that:

  1. read Cuts’ general Offense and Defense articles
  2. his teams look to run in transition opportunistically and run a lot of pressure defense (half court or full) depending on personnel
  3. overall tempo is in bottom half, but the offense is much faster (in terms of seconds lapsed) typically than his defense

We got into an overly technical discussion of overall tempo vs O/D breakdown in the X/O thread a month or so ago

I don’t know if this makes sense but Odom teams play with pace in a slow tempo.

Wording is confusing but point is they attack and run when it’s there. Pressuring style helps lead to some of that. It’s a good way to play IMO
