Yes, it seems hard to ignore that we get Sanchez back and with a couple months of evaluations we’re cranking out offers more freely than in prior recent years. I haven’t counted, but it sure seems that way.
He’s got bulldog Ty mentality in a Hunter package.
The assistants have been scouting this 2025 class for ages. Even back when we were recruiting 2022s it felt like we were following 2025s on twitter.
Last year at this time we had offers to Abraham, Caleb Williams, Kon, Jaeden Mustaf, Juke Harris, Rakease Passmore. And then in the fall added the Freitag and Perry offers.
I think the offers going out now are because they have a clearer picture of their need in 2025.
What’s interesting is that neither of the instate “studs” Ament or Scott have offers. And Im 100% okay with that/I like the kids we have offered so far.
I have a perhaps over simplified view of recruits and what works for UVA.
Put recruits in two broad categories: 1) guys who believe they are high level players but fully understand and embrace that they have work to do to improve to become their best version of themselves; and 2) guys who believe they’re high level players who just want to gain the right exposure to solidify or improve their draft status. Yeah, it’s not quite that simple, but for this purpose it provides the big picture.
Most guys in the first category need a year or two to become high level college players. A lot of guys in the second category do too, but they don’t understand that. UVA can do great things with guys in the first category. I do not believe they can succeed with guys in the second.
Now, nothing I just said has a thing to do with rankings. No question there could be a five star who sees himself as needing a lot of work to become the player he wants to be. That is the pool of five stars we have a shot at.
If a recruit, regardless of his ranking, has his posse focused on best positioning him for the NBA draft, he’s likely not coming in with the “humbleness” necessary to succeed in Tony’s scheme. Don’t go running away with that and exaggerating what I just said, every recruit that is being recruited by a BT basketball program likely has a NBA dream, but it’s about what the recruit believes they need to realize that dream. If it’s just exposure and a lot of shot attempts, then go to Kentucky. If it’s work on every aspect of the game and the humbleness to embrace the process of development, Tony might be a great coach for you.
At least that’s my unqualified opinion. And if I’m wrong I really don’t effing care. I like this view.
I was expecting an Ament offer soon, maybe TB just hasn’t seen him in person yet?
I was talking to another UVa fan a year or so ago. He commented he didn’t think Bennett was loyal enough to instate kids. I told him I didn’t give damn if he offers another Virginia HS player. There is a very good program here in the state that has won a national title, yet a lot of instate players scoff at it. Loyalty is a two way street.
Believe he has at DMV live.
Exactly! Which means that Tony should work to keep his side of the street open for any kids who want to travel down it. This is probably one of those “tbh, it doesn’t matter that much (so why is Haney belaboring it)” issues, because we don’t need VA kids / DC area kids to succeed at the highest level, but it seems like one of those “all else being equal, would be nice if we did” type things.
I think it would be nice if we could depend on VA / regional for some of our role guys / glue guys / growers. Basically like Devon Hall, Darion Atkins, etc., and probably a guy or two I’m forgetting. Esp. with the no-sit out rules, it’s easier to get buy-in when there are non-hoops things that buttress that buy-in. And also what the real blue-bloods (UNC, KY, Kansas) can depend on with their regional kids. Would be nice to have regional kid like Agbaji sign on for the slow burn deal, and then win a natty. Also, Agbaji ■■■■■■■■■-ed. Nobody tell our resident ■■■■■■■■■ bashers that! Wouldn’t that blow their minds?
So what you are saying is that if Kody Stattmann was instate then we should have prioritized him, right? jk
Would not make too much of when 2025 recruits are offered. They have their ways. It’s not really relevant until this fall. Some they’ll bring in for unofficial visits to offer, some Bennett will offer when he goes out in September. It’s just a matter of how they go about it.
what do you define as regional? because uva has had a lot of success recruiting in north carolina, which is a similar in length from cville is to the dmv. Seems like the specific complaint has been local with guys like simms, brown and taylor.
I was thinking VA and DMV (DC and its burbs), because I think of DMV as more “regional” to UVa than Carolina (b/c of NoVa’s being part of it), but I do take your point that we have been pretty successful at getting those types of kids from NC (like A-Rob most recently)
If you combine Jersey Wisconsin and North Carolina you get Virginia anyways.
Guess i just consider the opposite without Maryland playing in the acc. Gotta imagine a lot of kids in that area don’t grow up with the acc whereas kids in north carolina do.
Reclassing to 2024 is a strong option for this kid. He’s blown up the last month or two.
Duke insider on this kid
“This has moved fast, from what I’m told, with the interest escalating over the last week.”
Go land that man Duke.
Does this impact Kon at all? If it does, kinda feels like he is coming down to UVa and Marquette rather than UVa, Duke, and Marquette.
I would think so. 6’4 SG, and ranked about the same in 2025 as KK in 2024, and 2025 is supposed to be the better/deeper class.
Won’t impact Kon at all. Will all happen later.
HGN- “Kon is going to have to pick UVA over Duke. Not going to come down to someone committing before him……”
Me and everyone else- “sooooooo…… VJ Edgecombe is going to commit to Duke before and take his spot right?”
Kon Kan’t Kommit if Kids have Klaimed K jr’s sKollies. WelKome to WisKonsin South Kon!
