I’d be more concerned if Kon flipped to bama for a huge NIL check, but this par for the course with Duke. Tony will move on to the next one
I mean I’m not being defeatist just a realist. If a guy gets that fifth star we should really stop prioritizing their recruitment. Tony is 0’ for on those guys. But it’s not the end of the world. Leito and Pete brought in more 5 stars than Tony but their programs sucked. Tony won a championship with quality four star guys who bought in. Good news is we have a bunch of athletic four star guys here again. The mentality going forward is just beat all of em that spurned us. Beat Duke every damn time.
Or you convince them to reclass. Diakite may have been a 5-star had he not done so. And perhaps “the shot” doesn’t happen.
True Lodger. I think Diakite would have been a five star had he not reclassified.
Some people seem to think he didn’t even let CTB and the staff know his decision. If true, that’s low, especially for someone who has been recruiting you as long as Tony.
It’s fine.
I mean, obviously it sucks, but we’ll be fine. He was a want, not a need, and now we can go get Keith. He’s great, but his total package is no scarier than the other 5* kids Duke would have put in that spot, and he would have cause us more roster issues than Keith as a 25.
And, as a small bonus, it’s hilarious how screwed Power is. I don’t think Kon will be screwed, he’ll be a hassle for us, but CTB’s up to the challenge.
I was gonna say we should get back in the mix for Nate Ament but just remembered he has a Duke offer … sell him on a reclass?
I know we’ll be fine, it’s just incredibly frustrating to lose a guy to Duke again. It feels like we’ve been left at the altar for Keels, Power, and now Kneuppel all in four recruiting cycles. I wonder if this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and CTB stops spending all summer on guys who get their fifth star and likely aren’t coming here.
Not Earth, Wind & Fire. TEMPTATIONS, dammit. TEMPTATIONS.
First time I heard that song on the car radio I had to pull over into a mall parking lot and cut the motor. Had to listen all the way through and didn’t want to miss a note.
What do Caleb Foster, Kon Knueppel, and TJ Power all have in common? All of them played on aau teams that didn’t make peach jam. So only recruit peach jam kids.
I’m mad at myself for hoping and paying attention.
I think it’s worth remembering that Jacob Cofie is a much more important recruit for this cycle than Knueppel. I believe we had a discussion last spring when Knueppel first appeared on our radar that he would be a nice “get”, but a power forward was a greater need. Virginia is a bit crowded on the wings without Knueppel. And, while he does project to be better than those already on the team, all recruiting is a crapshoot. Who knows how Bond, Rohde, and Gertrude will perform? Or, Buchanan? What were your expectations of Dunn heading into last season? For that matter, what were your expectations of DeAndre Hunter after his redshirt year? Essentially, Knueppel would have been a nice addition to the squad, but he was hardly a critical need. Cofie, on the other hand, was just that. Despite all the moaning and groaning here tonight, the program is in great shape. These are the good ol’ days!
Edit to add: Upon reflection, I seem to remember that that discussion last spring said that the most important position to recruit this year was a point guard (Bliss) followed by a power forward (Cofie), and that Knueppel was just a “want” and not a “need”.
“September” is an upbeat, happy song. The lines “It was the third of September/That day I’ll always remember/'Cause that was the day that my daddy died” come from “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.”
By the Temptations, dammit!
Same as coming into this season - lottery pick @AnonymooseHoo
What uncommon perspicacity!
The “Wisconsin” connection really had me thinkin’ this was different.
Although upon rereading, it seems that Tpain (the OP) could have been referencing the EW&F song.
If so, apologies, because my mood right now is “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and that’s exactly where my brain went.
OK, but this is the line quoted. Today. On the 21st of September. A lyric from the song September.
By Eart Wind & Fire, damn it!
