March 2023 - ACC Hoops

Actually just looked it up and both TCU and Iowa state are 9-9 in the Big 12. They’d be fine under my proposal. My original post said require a winning record but think I’ve pretty fairly corrected to ‘.500 or better’ in subsequent messages. Think we’d all be fine with a Mississippi State for FAU trade

Fwiw, Bracket Matrix has FAU in comfortably, as a 9-seed.

In other words you want to ruin the best sporting event of the year.

Not touching the Stanley Cup playoffs

And no I wouldn’t actually change the tournament structure much either (make Dayton all at large teams but that’s about it). Just stated what I would enjoy. There are 300 million+ other people to consider and not just what I’d enjoy the most

If Pitt hits that 3 at the end, Luckie and Valentine almost certainly would have been suspended.
On the previous possession Pitt hit a 2 that was counted as 3 to get them within 2 - when it should have been a 3 point margin.
And the last 3 attempt almost went in.

Luckie and Valentine did a game together? Were they one upping each other to be star of the show?

Not every team in the tournament has a realistic chance to win the tournament. Not even every at large team has a realistic chance to win. This shouldn’t be a factor in selecting the teams. You’re rewarding teams with good resumes a chance to compete, which is all you can do.

Completely agree with that in real life every team doesn’t have a path to win. But let’s at least stop giving chance after chance after chance to teams that have already proven they aren’t capable while not even giving a 2nd chance to 250+ teams!

Fair enough. But a team with a 7-11 conference record has no business dancing, unless that team goes to the conference title game (and it won’t).

Guess there’s the Iowa State team that was 5-9 in the B8 years ago, but that shouldn’t be a precedent the selection committee replicates.

I’d prefer to see CoC or FAU.

But wait .. UVA has won 6 of the last 10 ACC regular season titles .. but Bennett has recruiting problems and dont know how to use proper lineups. And, we would have a losing record in the Big 12. The amature armchair children on here are entertaining…

Carry on …

Saw them when they opened for U2 on their ‘87 tour. They were OK.

No, you have a good point about the committee needing a good defense of their decision on the last four spots. I do think every year there are one to two decisions that everyone argues about after the fact and I could see it being a UNC inclusion this year. You are right though they have little to hang their hat on (one win against us, a hard fought loss to Bama, and wins over bubble NCSt, Mich, and Clemson). I am sure some people are hoping they at least get to the ACCT CG to justify inclusion. (Edit: they beat Charleston too, that’s a decent win)

This really isn’t even the argument being made. Are you not yourself an armchair general for this cause you repeatedly fight for? LOL

Everyone else: “Hey we could be playing better/it will be interesting to see how we adjust to different offensive approaches from other teams given our real limitations that even Tony himself has directly referred to, talking about how he wished he had Mamadi and how defense at the 4 has been a major weakness. Let’s talk about that and what we could see to work around that”

TobaccoHoo: “THESE AMATEUR ARMCHAIR GENERALS…”

Yeah, Carolina is the perfect example of what Hoos9412 is getting at: they’ve had 10 chances to win a Quad 1 game and they’ve succeeded only once (and that was against the most borderline of Quad 1 teams: Virginia). UNC has proven repeatedly that they’re not at that level. Whereas a team that’s 0-0 vs. Quad 1 might, who knows, turn out to be really good. (Probably not, but at least they haven’t already proven so.)

Anyway, I think UNC can’t get an at-large bid at this point. Their best path is to get to the finals against Virginia & NC State (State is a better win than Clemson), and neither of those are resume-changing wins. Throw in a couple autobid stealers, and some other bubble team doing something truly impressive to get in… Heels need to win it all.

It must have been so difficult to replace Roach with Proctor (No. 27 in 2022) and Whitehead with Mitchell (No. 20 in 2022), and still have two top-5s in Filipowski and Lively to take pressure off the replacements at the 1 and 3.

Can’t say enough about a coach of a preseason national top 5 team drawing the 4-seed in the seventh-rated conference in America.

Trying circumstances seems like a huge stretch there Seth

The ironic thing is that if they beat us on a neutral floor, it quite likely drops our NET past 30, so while they’d pick up a Q1 win in Greensboro, they’d simultaneously lose one as well.

This is a perfect example of how as nice as Scheyer comes across (for the most part) the CBB media will ensure the Duke hate never dies

Re: UNC — yeah, they have to win the ACC-T, I think, and I think that’s fair.

Duke — look, I don’t think Scheyer deserves any profiles in courage awards, but I otherwise think Seth is correct. Duke’s had some bad injury luck and Duke is playing well now that everyone is back and healthy. With Whitehead back, they’re #15 per gerrymandered Torvik.

Besides, if we want to play the “see? The ACC was disrespected again!” card — and I know some of you are dying to play that card — we have three great hopes: (1) BVP’s mustache, (2) John Ruiz, and Jon Scheyer.
