March 2023 - ACC Hoops

Gag. So hard to win with a roster full of Burger Boys.

Yes, when they get injured all season, it is hard. Why do I have to stick up for this guy? Can’t we all just acknowledge they have had difficult circumstances? When they have?

I know boo-friggin-hoo… but then we are all like (me included) … “well Reece is only 98.5% so that’s why we aren’t playing as well…”

Folks, it’s okay to hate Duke just because. You literally do not need a reason! But then we get annoyed when people say some correct things? Not me, I hate** Scheyer just for being himself.

** sports hate, to be clear. I’m sure he’s a lovely young man.

Oh so you’re saying you love Scheyer and you love Duke. Well I for one remain a UVA fan and btw I trust Tony, I don’t question him.

As good of a thread as any

Replies are already complaining that this means they must ignore conference tournaments. But what do you expect the committee to do, wait until Sunday afternoon to get started? They have to sort things out the best they can in advance. (Besides which, “one more game” on some team’s resume is going to cause only a marginal shift. The committee can rank order and still make mild adjustments as they go.)

Who was injured all season?

Lively missed 2 games, Roach 4 and Whitehead 8.

In their eight losses:

Whitehead was out for Kansas and Miami.

Roach was out for Clemson.

Lively and Whitehead were out for Wake.

None of the three was out for Purdue, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Virginia.

It’s not as though Duke doesn’t have any talent waiting on the bench.

Most aren’t going to feel sorry for a coach with the following roster, even with a key guy missing a key game from time to time:

Jaylen Blakes G — No. 109 (2021)
Mark Mitchell F — No. 20 (2022)
Tyrese Proctor G — No. 27 (2022)
Dariq Whitehead G/F — No. 2 (2022)
Jeremy Roach G — No. 23 (2020)
Jacob Grandison G — 10 ppg/41% 3PFG% at Illinois last year
Jaden Schutt G — No. 75 (2022)
Ryan Young F/C — 9.0 ppg/5.2 rpg @ Northwestern over three seasons)
Kyle Filipowski F/C — No. 4 (2022)
Dereck Lively F/C — No. 3 (2022)
Christian Reeves C — No. 145 (2021)

Yup and Lively and Whitehead missed most of the preseason, too. So it sounds like you’re saying they had a lot of injury issues, so we agree.

Not asking anyone to feel compassion for Jon Scheyer (as I’ve said already), just pointing out that it’s correct that they had injury issues.

Ah, I got it. I typed “all season” off handed and you’re pointing out that they ALL were not injured ALL season. In fact, none of them were injured all season, and all of them played some of the season, therefore everyone feel free to hate on Duke for what ever reason you want, because lord knows I won’t be able to convince you otherwise.

Plenty of reasons here. Though not sure the soccer moms one would fly in the 2020’s

That seems to be the case now. They said last year VT wouldn’t have gotten in without winning the ACCT, when it was assumed they were a lock by making the final game.

It used to annoy me that they counted conference tourney games the same because of how teams have unequal motivation. But I think now they’ve swung too far in the other direction, almost removing hope for teams like UNC to play their way in without winning the auto bid.

I just find hard to believe that if UNC lost to a really really awesome DUKE team in ACC finals that they wouldn’t find a way to sneak UNC into the tournament.

Is Reece”s back up another top 30 recruit in Tyrese Proctor? No it’s not.

Listen- even if Roach and a couple of their other guys are injured they still have Blakey, and a few of their other pieces to shift around. They *still have 13 scholarship players the majority are atleast 4 stars.

I cannot stand the built in excuse that “dook is young or injured” or that “Scheyer is NOT K, so how can we (the media) criticize him. And then on the flip side if they’re good then it’s what we expected and we- the media get to suck them off.

They get their flowers, either way. Does anybody else get the same built in “youth or injury” excuse when they’re not good?

I’m still in shock that the refs got the no call right at the end of our game. I know the media and the ACC bitched and moaned about it, but they actually got it right. And the right call kept duke from winning the game as well as a share of the ACC.

Beyond belief that actually happened.

Teams get the “they’re hurt” excuse all the time. Also the reason they’re young is because of roster decisions made by someone besides Scheyer. He’s already indicated he doesn’t prefer a roster that young

Well- he has 5/6 more young players coming in next year so it’s best to wait on people’s actions vs. the BS they spew.

When do they announce the All-ACC awards? I see where the Big East is out.
