This video isn’t long enough.
Impressive? Isn’t it required at UVA to graduate in 4 years unlike most schools?
I don’t think so. I think 5 years was not that common, but still common enough. Not sure what happens after 5.
I don’t think this is the case if we believe what is said about Armaan and Jayden. They lost too many credits to graduate on time but that has not stopped them from being eligible and available.
I think you’re limited to 8 full time semesters at UVA in the College. Transfers spend more than 8 semesters in college, but fewer than 8 at UVA.
This seemingly confirms my understanding except it says “limited” instead of “limits.”
McIntire isn’t the College, though, so maybe you can take more than 8.
Hmm, interesting. But you can start to see the footnotes and exceptions pile up as you click around a bit.
I guess if you have 119 credits after 8 full time semesters, you’re doomed to wait the rest of your life on a non-moving line at Carruthers Hall.
Hmmm! Is the E-School different?
I had a roommate who refused to take 6 classes a semester. So he graduated in 9 semesters.
Okay, if anyone cares:
Students are limited to eight full-time terms (fall/spring) and may not enroll in a ninth semester except under very special circumstances.
Ooh- can I be very special? Then:
Barring unusual circumstances, and with the written approval of the Dean’s office, students who have completed the allotted eight full-time semesters must complete any remaining degree requirements in
- Summer Session, and/or
- January Term and/or
- as a part-time student. College students are permitted to take up to 16 credits on a part-time basis toward the degree. No more than six credits may be taken in a given part-time semester.
So there you go. You have to finish CLAS in 8 semesters unless you don’t, in which case there are various other options you can take advantage of.
I had taken a few AP classes and so dodged some required hours, and still I didn’t finish up in 8 semesters. (Was I lazy? Yes. Yes I was.) Took summer school, finished in August.
Still shows the academic emphasis. In Texas, so many schools are almost defaulting to 5 years as a viable alternative
Only 6 at a time. My old association dean would be so proud of me for finally reading the rules on this stuff.
It’s kinda weird, they’re in the business of selling education, but after you’ve bought a certain amount they cut you off. “Sorry sir, you’re too educated. I’mma have to dial you back a bit. Unless… graduate school?”
Yeah, no doubt. I was a bit of a skeptic that UVa’s academics were significantly different than other high majors, but when I started poking around on transfer hours, etc., we are definitely more stringent.
I think a case can be made that there’s nothing wrong with being able to complete in 5 or more years or have more permissive options for different types of students, but wherever one falls on those opinion questions, UVa is definitely more like some of the elite private institutions than some of the public universities with whom we compete on the field/court.
My weird pet peeve is that the whole point (allegedly) of the 1st year, second year thing (vs. sophomore, junior) was that “there are no seniors in learning!”, but then CLAS just ties the “years” to credit levels anyway. So you could be in your 3rd year at UVa and be a 4th year. Got it?
Based on his prior q&a submissions and posting history…you’re going to need to block off a few more hours than usual
Hah all of this discussion feels like ever dinner time conversation in my house growing up. And if y’all really want to dive in to how this all works esp. regarding athletes, Mama Dragon would be happy to jump in and give her $10 worth.
The 4 vs. 5 year thing is silly and in many ways just an outdated model that some schools cling to as a way to affirm their status. To @dave92 schools are less interested in keeping students around for a 5th year because they don’t make their money off admissions it’s the room and board where the real revenue kicks in.
There’s also an argument that if you’re a public university with (obviously) finite resources, then for the public good you have an obligation to incent students to “get in and get out” in a reasonable time in order to make room for others. (Don’t know if all colleges care though. You hear stories about colleges seemingly happy to keep kids paying tuition for 8 years or whatever.)
“So Haney are you excited for the game tonight!?”
“Mark, first, thanks for having me on. Second, that’s a great question, but before I answer I’d like to discuss something I’ve been thinking about…”
Haven’t read the thread, but was just coming on here to get some fresh takes…regarding Franklin, for example, what is the consensus among the fans about his return? I have nothing against Franklin, and when he’s hitting, his shot is so smooth like buttah, but really I don’t see him getting much better. I guess the question is do we have better options, or at least more potential behind him?
The answer - next year - is probably no, unfortunately.
If Armaan and Reece came back (+ IMac), that would easily be the best backcourt in the ACC (shocking transfers in not withstanding). So yes- it would be extremely good!
In some ways I get it, if someone’s looking at year 6 towards their BA something has gone seriously awry. If there’s a good reason for it (personal tragedy, changed from being an English major to Engineering as a 3rd year, etc) then you should be able to get permission to do it, but only sparingly because UVA doesn’t want headlines about sticking kids with $500k in debt.
