Here we go ā¦
Pretty good episode. Some cynicism, but also some pushback on the cynicism (for Haney). One detail I hadnāt heard before: the rev share cap is for the academic year. Could set up budgeting/tanking decisions for football teams.
This was a big topic in the UVa sports panel discussion I attended. When most schools are earmarking ~90% for football and MBB, it was only a matter of time.
This is only for the back pay portion of the settlement. Some future lawsuit might go after the revenue cap allocation going forward.
I think the schools will argue that Title IX mandates equal opportunity, not necessarily equal outcomes. So the money going to the football and basketball players helps the schools generate overall athletic revenue which pays for the womensā teams creating the equal opportunity. The alternative being not supporting revenue sports and not eating TV revenue and cutting sports, including womensā teams.
Iām still only about 25 minutes in or so, but this is already a much better, more nuanced discussion of the issues than Iāve heard on the college hoops side.
If we think hard, we could probably think of a system that all or 99% of us interact with, that relies heavily on voluntary compliance and penalties on the back end. If enough guys who go over the line get eligibility pulled and that stands up in court** then youāll probably get robust enough compliance.
** which is ultimately why this is probably more of a legal/political issue. The ābehavioralā elements (why would Bruce Pearl comply?) will ultimately depend on whether enforcement is robust. And whether enforcement is robust will depend on to what extent enforcement is legally buttressed.
Filing taxes, stopping at red lights, Iām sure thereās more obvious ones.
Yeah, I was thinking of taxes. Itās a not uncommon scheme, I guess.
Right on red⦠thats where they get ya
Yeah, itās amazing how many people donāt know that the law is āright on red after a full stop.ā
And illegal in NY
I have to yell this at many cars per year. Always Jersey platesā¦
Very encouraging look into whatās been taking place with UVA Sports behind the scenes⦠I know everyone has their opinions but this is great in mine.
Very encouraging development and what many of us have asked for. Better communication will allow her to demonstrate a proactive plan and eliminate the vacuum that has led to so much criticism in recent weeks - in the media and among fans.
I can poke holes in some parts of that statement, but I applaud her for releasing it and taking on a more visible leadership role. Well done, Carla.
Glad they put something out, it doesnāt really say much more than an VAF newsletter though imo. Hopefully weāll get more meat in the future. I do appreciate her willingness to engage and acknowledge what is going to be needed going forward.
For a place that operates like itās Fort Knox I thought was a very refreshing informational. And for Carla/the AD as a whole to be doing a podcast is miles beyond what I wouldāve expected from them.
If the buyout counts against the rev share cap, does that mean the school receiving the buyout gets an increase in their pool?
I assume it means they get the money but it doesnāt go into their cap (that is ā no, I assume they canāt pay more)
I guess they can pay more in the sense that the contract is no longer on their books, but not extra I donāt think.
Are āprogress toward degreeā standards defined the same for everyone, or is that school-by-school?
