šŸ’° Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) Discussion

I think legally this one’s a non-starter. The players are already getting no NIL money from any team. The NIL money comes from outside sources. And if the Good Feet Store wants to hire you to do a commercial, the NCAA has no legal ability to prevent that. Per the court ruling.

Now, if the NCAA ever steps up and starts paying players directly… then they’d have a benefit they could withdraw. But until then…

And if the NCAA starts paying players directly, then they could directly bargain these restrictions (that’s why pro sports leagues can have them, the players have agreed to them), BUT the NCAA refuses to get anywhere near an employee/employer relationship

Shawn was in Hancock dorm his first year. His roommate was Ray Savage, who started at LB so everyone knew who he was. Shawn was redshirting, so he was just Ray’s roommate to most people. Then he’d go out and throw the football with us, and he’d throw the ball from what seemed the front door of Hancock to the other end of Bonneycastle. Everyone would be like wtf?

It’s a total own goal at this point. The money and appetite to compensate the players is there in the market, it’s just a matter of whether it happens overtly or covertly. The NCAA seems to be invested in the fantasy that the money and appetite are not there.

If everyone who complained about UVA’s NIL situation also had to disclose their level of giving to the NIL collective, there’d probably be a lot less complaining.

I’m happy to disclose I’m at $zero. Not because I am unwilling, I’m confused on best place to put the bag.

And there’s the rub. As soon as you pay Nijel Pack his $800k, Isaiah Wong wants his bag or he’s leaving. At least Miami got a Final Four out of it. What did UNC get?

I almost added in ā€œother than handing to questionable people like @DFresh11 ā€œ but refrained out of respect.

I sent fresh $20 for the bag to land EG and pretty sure the $10 EG got made all the difference.

Edit: for the regulators, this was a joke.

I’d like to make it transparent, so people have a say in where it goes, who donates and how much. Example, 100 people buy a sponsor package from LRA for $10 a month. That group decides it wants LRA to sponsor a student athlete…we reach out and get the deal done. That player gets to be sponsored by LRA, does podcasts and appearances.. Everyone knows who and how much. We are 100% above board.

So Netflix, but for bags.

An alternative business model would be Uber, but for bags. (ie not subscription).

@Merch , I’ll be in for that. Would it be the same player or would you change each month?

That’s the most logical setup I’ve heard and if I have to go through an org Id rather do it with that level of transparency.

I want it stipulated that every time this player does a podcast or appearance, he’s holding a big cloth bag with a giant dollar sign on the side.

Either of those sounds good to me. Honestly I’ve wanted to contribute but I don’t have enough money to be taken seriously individually, don’t know where to send it beyond VAF (where I already donate, but that all goes into the big pile rather than specifically for this), and kinda don’t trust the other folks at work on this (other than LRA).
