Nashville Hoops Showdown. Wooooooo!
This has nothing to do with it… but all the name of this makes me think of is…
Mentally, I’m placing way too much weight on this game as an indicator of how we’ll fare in March. But just can’t get that out of my mind and really hope we dominate.
Just curious as to why??
Ohio State isn’t even in the field right now…. First four out.
Seems like roughly the equivalent of the 1st round opponent we’ll face in 4/13 or 5/12 game
Maybe more like an 11-seed (the stomping grounds of your last at-large power conference types), as 12- and 13-seeds tend to be from the best one-bid conferences. But broadly, yes, this is a NCAAT-quality game.
This is basically a free game against a P4 opponent.
Because of how the season has gone so far, Virginia should get to a win total at least in the mid-20s and be one of the top seeds in the ACC tournament. Even if the Hoos drop this game, the only way there would be a big reputational drop is if OSU somehow boat raced Virginia. But there’s very little evidence from either team to suggest that is a likely outcome.
My rough thinking from playing around with the T-Rank TourneyCast is that if you (dangerously) assume wins at GT and home to Wake and VT, we have the following paths to different seedlines:
- Better than 4 seed: Beat Duke and 2 of OSU/Miami/NC State
- 4 seed: Beat at least 2 of OSU/Miami/NC State
- 5 seed: Beat only 1 of OSU/Miami/NC State
This is eliding some disaster scenarios, obviously, and ignoring ACCT possibilities. But a win gets us closer to cementing a 4-seed and keeps a path to better open; a loss doesn’t totally close the door to improving on a 4-seed but introduces more downside 5-seed risk.
It’s a nationally televised late season game against a good quality unfamiliar/non-conference opponent on a neutral floor in front of a lively crowd. Basically it’s an NCAAT prep game for us that would have been nice to have in some of the Bennett years. I think this game is going to serve us well, win or lose.
What does it say if you beat everyone but Duke down the stretch.
4 seed
Bruce Thornton could have entered the portal the last two years and would have been the best player in the portal. Instead he chose to stay with Diebler which is wild but im sure Ohio St paid him like $4 million to stay. Too bad the rest of their team sucks. And they dont have Jacari White.
Hoos by 5
Have we ever been a 5 seed?
Would be cool as a new regime to have a new seed line for the madness?
Edit never mind - been a 5 seed plenty….
Haven’t ever been a 3 seed - let’s go for that!!
5 seed has been bad for us - except for the fighting Richard Morgan’s of 1989
