Just gonna leave this here… always remember ALL 5 of the pillars. Servanthood, humility, passion, unity, and most of all, thankfulness. Never forget this either

Really frustrating watch. Such a winnable game. They can’t seem to close many of these close ones out. State comes in short handed, their big man who was problematic all night fouls out with 8+ minutes to go, State misses multiple late free throws and we still take the L at home. Frustrating.

I normally don’t bitch about the refs, but they were awful tonight. And I mean that both ways (see Funderburk’s 5th foul).

And seems like maybe I’m in the minority here, but I can’t stand listening to Jay Bilas. I respect his basketball knowledge but hate hearing him.

People declaring our NCAAT chances dead have not looked at either a) the general quality of bubble teams this year and b) the Hoos schedule in February/March. It has been a frustrating stretch, but the schedule sets up to make a bit of a run, with (more importantly) some solid Q1 opportunities.

Three home games against top 8 squads (FSU, Duke, Louisville) and road games @VT, @Pitt, and @Lville. If Hoos go 3-3 in those Q1 opportunities, and let’s say 5-1 in the other games (toughest game is likely @Miami or ND at home), that’s a 20-10 squad, 12-8 acc with 4 Q1 wins. Likely square on the bubble, with an acc tourney opportunity as well…

We are so close.

What’s discouraging: Every game feels like we can only get 2-3 guys to play well, leaving us 2-3 guys away from a complete performance. Whether it’s the usual suspects (Key, Kihei, Jay, Mamadi) not getting support from the rest of the team or the other way around, we’ve just been missing what feels like the missing ingredient to close out a complete game and start turning these close losses into comfortable wins. Disclaimer: talking about O here not D, most everybody pulls their weight on D night in and night out.

What’s encouraging: On any given night anybody can step up and truly contribute. This isn’t a 6 man roster - we’ve got 8-9 guys who can go for 10+ any time out. Obviously we’re going to get what we’re going to get from our core 4 players mentioned above (for better or for worse), but we’ve also seen star turns from every other consistent minute-getter at some point in the season. Last night it was Papi and Casey.

If, and a huge IF, we can go from 2-3 guys playing well to 4-5 guys playing well every night (doesn’t necessarily matter who, just need a couple more) then this team cruises the rest of the way and we are in the tourney no problem.

Net to net - lots to be frustrated about as a fan watching now but also lots to be encouraged about watching these guys grow.

If I remember that’s what Mamadi said he told Tony in a meeting before the NCAAT. I’m ready. Meaning to be what you need me to be, star in my role kinda thing. it’s also his birthday so maybe he’s just ready for the party who knows.

I’m ready man

Found myself browsing last year’s teams individual analytics and thought I’d just leave this here. Planning to write something on, outside of the obvious, what Virginia lost last season. https://twitter.com/zachcarey11/status/1219798823435894785?s=20
