NCAAT First Round - Furman vs Virginia (12:30 PM, TruTV, Thursday, 16 Mar 2023)

This northern Kentucky team would scare the crap out of me to play. They aren’t hitting but man they are quick and jack up 3’s at will

Yeah they can’t shoot at all but would somehow be hitting half of those vs us

And for those who aren’t prayers, maybe buy his coffee?

They’re 5-29 from 3 lol that’s exciting. The coach was over telling everyone “shoot the ball” lol. I love it.

Houston is dodging a major bullet that NKU is missing everything.

I’m going to pray for two 40 percent 3 point shooters.

I wish our opponents would shoot 5-33 from 3 when we’re playing poorly.

Unfortunately we’re usually the team that shoots 5-33 from 3

First off,
Big hug to my HOOp’s fam. We all need a few hugs today/tonight & I am being serious.
After the game I made myself sleep till about midnight in order to miss the coverage the rest of the day.
So a sincere hug to you all.

The Game: The ending was as brutal as you can get, no matter what seed you are or if you are the fav or the dog. Just brutal. We can all agree on that I think. However, as stated by others (including the team) we shouldn’t have been in the position for that to happen. Free throws & missing bunnies & having the 1-3-1 blow the teams collective brain were issues for sure.

The Narrative: UVA can’t win in the first round. I am not going to go through our past double digit seeds history but I do know that every year we are placed by the commitie against a "mid major’ team that happens to be one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the country which happens to be the cryptonite for the "pack line’. Tin foil? perhaps… but check it out if you desire.

The Program: Short and sweet, I wouldn’t want anyone and I mean anyone other than CTB and his “standards” running our program currently. Do I think his “standards” remove us from a good amount of players?? Absolutely I do…but… was UVA getting those players berfore CTB arrived?? How about the “UVA academic standards”?? As we know, we are a school & program that actually require our student athletes to be students. At a school like UVA that can be quite daunting so in my opinion this has ALWAYS hurt the UVA sports programs (esp football & hoops). If we take UVA’s requirements & add CTB’s requirements then the pool of potential recruits are much lower than the say “average” P5 school. We must keep this in mind.

Redshirts: Full Diclosure, I am pro RS. I guess I just want to say to the folks that think players are forced to RS by CTB is that it makes no sense…again, in my opinon. If we believe CTB is truthful on pretty much every other word he says but for some reason when it comes to red shirtin’ a player we think he is a liar (the player decides) than I just am, um, on the other side of the argument I guess. I watched Traudt on the bench during our first game against NC Central this year. His eyes were wide. I truly think he saw the athletes on that team and thought that “if this is a low/mid major team then I know I am not ready for ACC teams (players)” Basically, I am not in Kansas (Nebraska) anymore…He told the staff right after that game his desire to RS. Bond had already decided before the season.

The Future: In my opinion, we will be fine. I do agree with the opinion that we do NOT need to just take whoever from the transfer portal just because they said “yes”.

Since our Natty in 2019 the college basketball scene hasn’t been normal.

2020: covid
2021: covid/no crowd
2022: we missed but it def took awhile for the team to gel, were playing well at the end of the season.

so to be forming opinions on the last 3 or 4 seasons doesn’t seem rational to me. If we want to talk about pre Natty then I get it but then I would argue that we are talking about 5 plus years ago.

In closing, I just want to say that I am as sick as everyone about today, but the folks who think the program is on fire are just wrong. UVA has had the odds stacked against them from the beginning… well before CTB arrived.
We do things the right way, again… even before CTB arrived. So, I can only suggest that we all be “thankful” that we are fans of a program that is founded on being good people, not cheating, etc and rather than be upset about what we don’t have…dare I repeat , be “thankful” for what we do have. A Natty won the “right” way and a coach, program, and school that do things the “right” way.
It is hard I know, I really do.
Let’s grieve this loss but not lose sight of our blessings.
another Hug for my Fam!
love!

In response to the armchair recruiting experts on here … Tony’s recruiting is just fine. 6 ACC regular season championships, 2 ACCT championships, a Natty, and BY FAR the most wins in ACC play the last decade. What else do you think you are entitled to?

Yes the losses to Ohio and Furman were tough. To keep it in perspective we had the luxury of only ONE practice the week of the Ohio game. Yesterday we lost on a play that would not happen again if you played it over again 500 times. Do you think we are the only team that has suffered eary tournament bad luck? I remind you of Villanova and Arizona … Duke’s Lehigh and Mercer fame.

This to shall pass. I’m ready for redemption 2.0. Bring it …

Wonder if Tony knows Sheds is gone and he wanted to put up the guys who will lead the team next year. Also, Sheds was emotional so maybe not a good choice.

Going under screens when the only way Furman was getting back in was the 3 ball. Hurt us again and again.

Circumstances and players change and yet here we are again. My theory is Tony’s system and recruiting profiles raise our floor and deliver regular season wins and reg season titles. As we get into post season, the high floor is less important than having guys that go get buckets when the other team is in desperation mode. We do not tend to have that type of player.

three point shooting teams will have the advantage over the packline teams…esp if the packline team doesn’t have three point shooting.

Yeah I figured it had a lot to do with how emotional Kadin was. He certainly seemed to show the emotions you see in seniors when they know they’ve played their last game. I sure hope not because I feel he could be really good next year.

Huh. In the first game of the last 5 post-season tournaments (going back to 2018) UVA has played in, including last year with the NIT, the Gardner-Webb game when UVA hit 30.4% of 3s was the only game in which UVA shot over 30% from 3. And in 3 of them we’ve shot under 20%.

That’s kind of remarkable.
