Yeah thatās fair but itās also exactly why I love Wes Miller. Look at what he did at UNCG. He basically built that program from the ground up (along with Kim Record). And Wes was thrown into that job as a midseason interim HC with zero HC experience.
Then you add to it his ACC/geographic ties, age, and the fact that heās been a force on the recruiting trail at Cincy (both HS and portal) such that heās built a top 15 squad, he seems like a very attractive fit. Sure, Carolina might scoop him up but thatās a good problem to have.
Itās kind of wild how they basically have zero post players. Washington and Lubin and thatās it. And those two donāt play much and donāt really produce.
My understanding is their NIL is a bit of a mess. They were in on all the big portal bigs (Ballo, Omoruyi) but apparently fell short on $$$.
Bubba was against it all and slow to adapt, but they are supposedly getting it together on the heels of the Belichick hiring (although that was apparently shoved down Bubbaās throat as well⦠his job situation is one worth monitoring to be honestā¦). I am still a bit skeptical of the money they are allegedly going to give Bill for everything! I know they have more money sloshing around their athletic department, but thatās still a ton for an ACC school with an endowment smaller than ours.
I ultimately think Hubert gets at least one more year with a supposedly revamped collective around him and then weāll see. This team, even without a big man should be much better than it is (and Iām not just saying that because I have a bet on them to win the ACC regular season).
If you recall, LRA precedent states that Missouri is in Ohio. And I didnāt miss your point, I moved on from it.
I take your meaning entirely. Heās happy to be a midwesterner for life. You miss my point that even your parallel isnāt actually parallel because, ya knowā¦itās a VA board and VA > OH (and MO by extension).
I donāt know why Iāve appointed myself defender of a just fine idea (hiring Odom), but I have so here goes:
Ignore this year, for now. What is more impressive about Millerās tenure than Odomās?
Miller - 10 years in a one bid league. 2 tourneys. Zero wins. 3 years in multi-bid leagues with zero at large.
Odom - 5 years in a one bid league. One tourney. One win. 3 years in a multi-bid league with one at large.
And the SoCon is IMO a better platform. And the A-10 is a little worse than Amer and much worse than B12.
This year: give Cincy the clear edge in noncon. But both are 0-1 in conference.
TLDR - seems tied at best for Miller, and this year is TBD (tho Cincy would have to crater to miss⦠but they might! And VCU will have to impress , but they might!)
Addendum- Muller had the better regular season. 2 outrifht and one shared crown. Vs one shared for Odom. But to be fair, John Becker
I donāt think Odom has a ābadā resume, I just havenāt seen much from him to convince me heād be successful at UVa. I agree that their resumes are comparable. I lean towards Miller due to his age and ability to attract talent. To be fair to Odom, he hasnāt had a job where he could realistically land top 25 classes, but itās hard for me to ignore how successful Miller has been recruiting talented players to Cincy. Now, he needs to win this year to show what he can do with the talent, but Iām extremely confident he would be able to attract the level of talent to UVA we would need to achieve our goals. Iāll admit Iām somewhat concerned by Odomās team full of seniors not being able to win close games against meh competition.
Also in the last 2/3 VCU games (vs. New Mexico and St. Bonaventureā¦other game was a home game vs. W&M so yeah even though Earl has done a decent job in year one there) an Odom coached team, with all those said COVID seniors, has allowed the opposing teamās best player (Dent for UNM had 40 pts. and Council for SBU had āonlyā 20 pts. but game winning shot) to pretty much single-handedly beat them.
Eh, hard to say. I like to think Iām a forward thinking guy, so I think thatās pretty wrong, but also you have to grant some grace to folks. Was it more of a one-time screw-up? Or indicative of misogyny that would be out of place in our athletic department?
McDermott had that language slip up that hurt him for a year or two, that he seemed to recover from, as far as I can tell.
It was pretty harmless to begin with and Turner has more than atoned for it. It was stupid of him to say it and unbelievably stupid for him to talk about it in a press conference, but I donāt view it as a big deal. I think he was simply just ignorant regarding how saying that word in that context would be interpreted, which I view more as a dumb mistake than him being an actual bigot or anything like that.
As far as what coaches say during the course of a game, this is pretty tame.
I remember reading something somewhere 5 years ago that this wasnāt entirely out of the norm for him.
But granted yes, people can change and maybe heās learned from that and changed.
But also, heās been at UCI for 14 years, wins the conference pretty much 2 out of every 3 years and never took another job? This isnāt a Mark Few situation. Heās a former Stanford assistant and Stanford hired Kyle Smith last year instead (not that I fault Stanford for that, Kyle Smithās high on my list of guys Iād love for us to hire).
14 successful seasons in a 1 bid league says something about a coach. Iām not sure what exactly, but something.
Oh, and heās been the top seed in the conference tournament 7 times and won it once. The other NCAA appearance came from winning the tournament as a 2 seed.
An interesting Xās and Oās note about Turner is that heās decided to up his teamās pace of play the last three seasons, but in contrast to many other coaches hasnāt upped his three point volume. UC Irvine is still only taking around 16-17 threes per game and ranked near the bottom of the country in 3PA rate, but they also identify as a defense first program who is elite at controlling the glass (top 10 in defensive rebounding % this year). They have one of the better mid major bigs in Bent Leuchten.
Im glad Hubert Davis fell on the āWhat would Cade Tyson and Ven Lubin look like togetherā sword for me and funny enough it might cost him his job. (Although I still ike Lubin and just think he choose extremely poorly because he still needs player development and is also being used weirdly)
Both are among the highest spenders in their respective conferences, so they out resource the competition. Coaches there should win and are expected to win.
Irvine is a really nice place to live and his wife is an ER physician. Looks like his daughter is at High Point and son is a HS senior so if there was ever a time to head back eastā¦
I believe both Turner and his wife are Roanoke natives so if itās not us, I bet heāll be on VPIās list if they move on from Young.
Heās not quite as high on my list as others but I like the fit.
