Given his usual sources, it’s one of about three/maybe four guys.

My kingdom for Darian DeVries

How the hell is he 7 years older than Calhoun? It’s Devries or Shaka for me.

Tier 1 meaning P5 and a good option? or just P5?

Because there are a lot of P5 guys wanting out of their situation who are no bueno. Rodney Terry being one, for example. There are some mid-major guys who I’d take over a Rodney Terry.

I genuinely have no idea what a tier 1 even looks like for us rn. Would depend heavily on buyouts.

Assuming anything is on the table I would guess it’s:

  • Shaka
  • DeVries
  • Byington
  • John Wooden

You know, maybe we’re overlooking a well-qualified guy who should be available. He’s a natty winner, has pro playing and coaching experience, including an interim HC role, and some connections to the elite grassroots scene: Kevin Ollie

I think so far we’ve really failed to emphasize the importance of the fact that the V in Darian DeVries’s name is capitalized. That screams UVA to me.

You on the train bro?

This is probably a dumb question, but I’m asking it in all earnestness: do you think what the ā€˜hard core fans’ (us) think and who they (us) want as the next UVA HC makes its way somehow into the official conversation? Does anyone ever say in a board meeting somewhere, ā€œWell who do the fans want? Who do they think would be the best choice?ā€ Because honestly if the powers that be aren’t tapping into our brilliant hive mind for intel and perspective I believe that would be a wasted opportunity. Seriously. I mean I’m learning a ton just spending 2-3 hours every day reading discussion threads lol. Like they should basically just poll LRA and let us choose the next head coach. Wouldn’t that like actually make sense??

They drop zhoos references regularly, yes. Control F those meeting notes.

All seriousness, my guess is it does matter but in an opaque and hard to confirm way. Chatter and narrative gets relayed from here and elsewhere to people with influence, which works both directions.

It would matter a lot more if one of us were really rich.

I do think we end up with a good coach rather it be from an existing high level program or one of the top mid major coaches. Being a dominant program the last 10 years and winning a natty shows that we can support the highest level of play.
Of course things work alot differently now with NIL/portal etc, a coach will need some freedom to be able to work that effectively.

I’m trying. Give me some time.

A few updates on some of our potential targets. It’s not comprehensive and it may not even be realistic (see eg Shaka / Otz) :

Record / Torvik / WAB / Haney anecdotes

Mitch Henderson (Princeton)
11-4 (0-0) / 153 / 99 / pretty meh noncon, only 1 decent win (Rutgers) and a couple bad losses. Conf season about to start. Disappointing thus far given talent

James Jones (Yale)
7-6 (0-0) / 82 / 156 / opposite of Princeton (meaning, good predictives , but not many wins); a few close losses to decent teams. Not sure what was expected

Matt Langel (Colgate)
5-11 (2-1) / 296 / 332 / not his best year

Ritchie McKay (Liberty)
14-2 (2-1) / 63 / 52 / not really a candidate IMO, but he is having a nice season

Bucky McMillan (Samford)
13-3 (3-0) / 105 / 58 / pretty nice year so far

Wes Miller (Cincinnati)
10-4 (0-3) / 40 / 59 / having a tough conf season so far, but how could you not?

Porter Moser (Oklahoma)
13-2 (0-2) / 43 / 15 / very good noncon and two Q1A losses in SEC gauntlet

Ryan Odom (VCU)
12-4 (2-1) / 54 / 78 / Seton Hall OT loss currently keeping them out of NCAA-T IMO; still need a great run in A-10 to be an at large

T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa State)
13-1 (3-0) / 8 / 9 / has gone from pipe dream to ā€œprobably not worth including on the listā€

Shaka Smart (Marquette)
14-2 (5-0) / 13 / 4 / he’s the pipe dream I’m keeping an eye on, still

Drew Valentine (Loyola)
10-5 (1-1) / 121 / 144 / not a great season (but with injuries) and probably would go elsewhere if he is successful

Russel Turner (UC Irvine)
14-2 (4-0) / 81 / 35 / dark horse, but has had a dream season so far

Mark Byington (Vandy)
13-2 (1-1) / 47 / 39 / noncon SOS was garbage, but still impressive to go 12-1 as a rook; they’ll get pounded in conference (if they don’t, he must be awesome)

Mike Rhoades (Penn St)
12-4 (2-3) / 56 / 60 / also a very weak noncon; beat nobody but also didn’t lose to a nobody

How much leverage are y’all putting on results from this season compared to performances in seasons past?

For me, it depends. I think it’s most important for guys who seem to be at an inflection point like Moser or Odom. Less important for guys with longer track records like Shaka or Henderson.

Interesting but not determinative for anyone in year 1 of their current job

You better add DeVries before @JBHoo sees this. I’d probably have Hoiberg, even if he’s a little dreamish. Calhoun from Utah State. Bob Rickey I guess. And with Georgetown having a good year, there were rumors of Ed Cooley interest, legit ones not just the Providence pranksters.

Otzelberger has a huge buyout, so much even Kentucky couldn’t touch him last year. I don’t see UVA having any interest in Valentine or Turner but who knows.

I was gonna avoid any first year guys but then decided to add Byington.

Will try to add those folks in a bit
