Oh and Capel maybe? Maybe @USSoccer13 has got me overly hopeful but I’m more focused on the established HM coaches for now.

How much NIL does LRA have to contribute to get @Hooandtrue as our Portal GM?

And then find out all he does is stream Peach Jam to find the new risers

That’s more than I do. I just find the coaches, then go back to South Park reruns.

Some other names that havent been mentioned but fun (?) to toss around…

  • Mick Cronin - if UCLA underperforms maybe he’s available? Not a popular personality but gets results.

  • Chris Collins - what could he do with more resources? Not totally exciting.

  • Chris Gerlufsen - playing career was at Randolph Macon (coaching factory?). Was only with Golden for a couple of seasons, but has been pretty good at San Francisco.

  • Randy Bennett - just including him for last name and he’s been successful. Have done zero research but guessing based on tenure there are other reasons he hasn’t moved already.

I think Cronin and Randy Bennett are similar in that they’re great coaches but would likely get along with our donor base like oil and water.

Also do you mean Chris Collins lol, I think Doug has been out of coaching for a while.

Addendum:

Darian DeVries, WVU
11-3 (2-1) / 26 / 22 / so, so confusing. 0-2 in the ACC, which are sub-Sanchize numbers. But beat Kansas. Lost to Arizona in B12 play. Beat them in the noncon. Won at Phog / lost at Oakland zoo. A riddle wrapped in an enigma, then stuffed with French Fries and extra horsey sauce.

Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska
12-3 (2-2) / 29 / 25 / I’m not feeling it. Good numbers, but actual W/Ls kinda so-so IMO. If he keeps those numbers deeper into B10 play, will play closer attention.

Jerryd Calhoun, Utah St
15-1 (5-0) / 45 / 8 / I won’t even hate; impressive so far

Bob Richey, Furman
14-2 (2-1) / 116 / 51 / nice wins at Belmont and v Princeton

Ed Cooley, Georgetown
12-3 (3-1) / 69 / 53 / nice trajectory, given where they have been. And seemingly improving over the season (bad loss v ND in mid November to hanging tight at Marquette on Tuesday)

Jeff Capel, Pitt
12-3 (3-1) / 34 / 23 / Some solid wins (@OSU, v WVU) but also a couple blowouts (@Duke, @Miss St). Unclear if they’ll be helped by ACC (gaudy record) or hurt (pitfalls w/o many opportunities).

Ben McCollum, Drake
NOT TODAY, SATAN!

Couldn’t win with Jordan. Pass

Also reading that he was John Malkovich’s neighbor growing up. I’m back in.

Malkovich with a funny Jordan story, via Collins:

He told me a great story. He said to me, ā€œJohnny, you think I’m competitive? If Michael Jordan plays your five-year-old in ping pong, he has to win 21-0. And he has to bounce every ball off the middle of the kid’s forehead.ā€

What’s with hoops and ping pong?

To be clear, my #1 choice would be Otz. But I have accepted that’s not a realistic possibility with the extension signed a couple weeks ago…

All in on DeVries. Dudes a freaking winner. I’d be perfectly happy with Hoiberg. I think he’d succeed here and I think the fan base would love him. Mostly mean big time donors but everyone would love him. Hitting on the right personality is important. Especially now that the game is basically who can get the most donations.

I think Hoiberg is as good as it gets from an X’s and O’s standpoint, only worry I have with him is his ability to recruit this area. He’s pretty much a midwest lifer, would have to get some guys on his staff that can help him get accustomed to the region.

Realistically though every coach we pursue is gonna have at least one drawback. Hoiberg would be a fantastic get if he’s available.

I’d add Rick Carlisle. I also don’t think we should completely eliminate Dawn. She’s been way more publicly involved with the school lately. Think it’s still highly unlikely but so are many of the names we’re discussing.

What if Rick and Dawn had a kid we don’t know about? Add them to the list too.
