āSorry, no sub-.500 records in conference play allowedā
āIf heās any good, heās just going to leave for Wisconsin when Bo retiresā
āWould he even be a high major coach if his Dad didnāt give him the job?ā
Though I think someone would have pointed out that opportunities to hire guys who have already been Naismith Coach of the Year come around once a decade at best.
I could be wrong because Iām from Big 10 country, but I think 94 coaches out of 100 would pick Ohio St. over UVa. Holtmannās NCAA tourney failures wouldnāt deter many from taking that job. I think their hands were a little tied last year when Diebler won some big games.
Iām currently becoming Richard Pitino-curious. Has a showdown with Jerrod Calhoun on Saturday for the top of the MWC. Should be strength-on-strength with UNMās very good defense tested by Utah Stās very good offense.
MM+ sounds right. Scouting terminology for HS kids at that level.
For a time weād call them high major while differentiating āpower conferenceā for the others. Then there got to be such a stark contrast with tv money I guess, people no longer do that. Theyāre just lumped in as mid-major which isnāt really fair.
I say Yes for basketball-only. 7 out of the 8 are top-100 teams right now, Gonzaga gives the conference some top end. Not sure how the conference strength math will shake out, but from a glance it looks like they should end up close to where the ACC is right now.
Itās strange, because had Cooley stayed at Providence and been there the past two years with relatively the same success I imagine heād be near the top of our wishlist right now. I know his exit from Providence soured him on a lot of people but heās a very good coach, and heād recruit his ass off here.
That being said I donāt see him leaving Georgetown, so itās probably a moot point.
Their last two hires have been Chris Holtmann and Jake Diebler. Not even remotely close to the types of guys a near blue-blood can hire I donāt think itās a much better job than Penn State (itās better, but not significantly). Every penny of resources they have goes to football. I think you could legitimately argue Maryland is a better job.
