šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

2009 LRA next HC thread would have been like:

ā€œSorry, no sub-.500 records in conference play allowedā€
ā€œIf he’s any good, he’s just going to leave for Wisconsin when Bo retiresā€
ā€œWould he even be a high major coach if his Dad didn’t give him the job?ā€

Though I think someone would have pointed out that opportunities to hire guys who have already been Naismith Coach of the Year come around once a decade at best.

Hey thats what I said! (Ducking)

I could be wrong because I’m from Big 10 country, but I think 94 coaches out of 100 would pick Ohio St. over UVa. Holtmann’s NCAA tourney failures wouldn’t deter many from taking that job. I think their hands were a little tied last year when Diebler won some big games.

I’m currently becoming Richard Pitino-curious. Has a showdown with Jerrod Calhoun on Saturday for the top of the MWC. Should be strength-on-strength with UNM’s very good defense tested by Utah St’s very good offense.

Ohio State might be one of the best non-blue blood jobs in the country. Pretty much unlimited resources and there’s some basketball history there.

Tangent off of AQ’s post: what do we call the MWC and A-10? Low/high majors? Mid major+?

Multi-bid leagues? (sometimes… )

MM+ sounds right. Scouting terminology for HS kids at that level.

For a time we’d call them high major while differentiating ā€œpower conferenceā€ for the others. Then there got to be such a stark contrast with tv money I guess, people no longer do that. They’re just lumped in as mid-major which isn’t really fair.

Here’s a question. Is the new Pac 12 a power conference? Leftovers plus Gonzaga and the cream of the Mountain West.

ACC lite?

I say Yes for basketball-only. 7 out of the 8 are top-100 teams right now, Gonzaga gives the conference some top end. Not sure how the conference strength math will shake out, but from a glance it looks like they should end up close to where the ACC is right now.

Ed Cooley won this a couple years ago…

…. Oh no.

It’s strange, because had Cooley stayed at Providence and been there the past two years with relatively the same success I imagine he’d be near the top of our wishlist right now. I know his exit from Providence soured him on a lot of people but he’s a very good coach, and he’d recruit his ass off here.

That being said I don’t see him leaving Georgetown, so it’s probably a moot point.

Makes $6m a year to have a long leash. I wouldn’t leave

(Definitely not friar bias)

Their last two hires have been Chris Holtmann and Jake Diebler. Not even remotely close to the types of guys a near blue-blood can hire I don’t think it’s a much better job than Penn State (it’s better, but not significantly). Every penny of resources they have goes to football. I think you could legitimately argue Maryland is a better job.

Forbes also made a big splash at ETSU.

With a roster of JUCO guys who wouldn’t get into Wake.

Just handful of kids from the northeast who wanna go south for college and pay full tuition…

Speaking of Mike Young, Dustin Kerns is a very solid coach who is very much still under the radar. Spent several seasons with Young at Wofford.

Very true. The ACC is a dumpster fire.
