Off hand guestimation-
Money: probably(?) top 20
History: not top 20
Region/recruiting base: elite potential
Facilities: maybe top 20
Brand: not top 20
Conference: bad outlook but historic

I agree, but also Iād put all of those categories at least in the top 30. So I dunno if having some kind of cut-off at 20 is super useful. Main thing is we are in a competitive range.
And Iād argue to most coaches the places where we arenāt top 20 donāt matter as much to coaching candidates. Like history is nice, but look how helpful thatās been to UCLA and Indiana
Very good point. I guess the way I see it, there are two important factors- how likely are you to get a good coach, and how likely are you to keep him around. The difference in UVA and an Indiana or a UCLA imo is that we are probably on a similar playing field for getting a guy, but if they blow up and become a top 5 coach, I view UCLA and IU as higher ceiling and therefor more likely to keep a guy for their whole career.
Like I can see the best coach in the country not thinking twice about their career at: Duke, UNC, UK, Kansas, UCLA, IU, Michigan, Michigan State, UConn, Louisville, and thatās probably it. Maybe Villanova or someone Iām missing
If the question of UVaās place in a ālistā ranking menās basketball, then we probably arenāt in the top 20 because I think āhistoryā will be overweighted in any such ranking. But the question really is where do we rank out of the avaialble jobs come March and I believe that when it comes to $, we can support/compete with top salaries and funds for the team, our facilities are great, the recruiting area is elite as you say, we have an engaged fan base who will support excellence, and itās easier to be at the top of the ACC on a sustained basis. Frankly, other than āhistoryā, I believe weāre currently better than the Indiana or UCLA jobs (OK, maybe a little orange/blue tinted glasses) - unless the ārightā coach goes there, but that will be 20/20 hindsight because the hiring at those two schools since their glory days has not been great.
Curious what her fans care whether the next coach is here 5 years or 15 years?
Would we rather have a great 5 year run and the coach moves to Alabama or somethingā¦. Or have a āgoodā coach with sorta good results for 15 years?
Would you rather?
If you look at our history (which reflects the reality of sports at UVA) our success has been with younger coaches who come here during a formative part of their career and build a strong program. This is partly due to the criteria that UVA uses in selecting coaches but also partly due to what works here. We donāt bend the rules. We havenāt in the past spent huge amounts on sports and we donāt have a rabid fan base.
It is possible with the complete change in the environment for college athletics that we change as an institution but that would be novel.
I canāt think of an example where we have gotten a coach that came here, made a huge splash and then left after a short time frameāmaybe Craddock (my old coach for track and field who left for UNC). We have either had program builders (Holland, Welsh, OāConnor, Starsia, Bennett, etc) or short term coaches that were not as successful.
I think if you look at our history, we donāt lose that many coaches we want to keep. Bennett, DeSorbo, and Oak all certainly have other options but are still around, and our history before them is pretty good too. I am not terribly worried about losing guys once theyāre here unless they have obvious ties to a blue blood job like a Wes Miller (Dusty May would have fit in this camp last year with Indiana in their current state as well).
Now they might retire unceremoniously out of the blue one day, but thatās another issue.
Though more likely to stay longer than optimal (particularly a problem around lacrosse and womenās basketball) but we are too polite to force them to leave.
Actually we did force Dom out the door now that I think about it.
When was the last successful UVA coach to leave in any sport for a better opportunity? I think the diving coach left forFlorida (not sure if that is thhe correct schoolā¦) but that is the only one I can think of?
Bronco to New Mexico State?
OT: @BDragon⦠recognize the animation?
Boland left to work directly for USTA, but only lasted a year there before bouncing to Baylor.
That an English Rugby World Cup cat?
Successful coaches have never left UVA for another college job. I canāt think of any in any sport in the past 3 decades at least.
But how often do successful (add championship level to the criteria if you want) coaches in non-revenue sports at major P4 level schools leave for other schools? Thereās some high profile examples like Kim Mulkey or the Texas/A&M baseball coach. But I think if someone has established a successful program at a school, theyāve built up resource support and institutional goodwill such that they wouldnāt want to go somewhere else and start over.
Yeah, two points:
So, given the two points above, what is the role of a top coaching jobs list? (Other than entertainment)
The most you can say is discrete things: Dusty May prefers Michigan to Louisville. But why? Who knowsā¦
Iām having a salad right now. Are salads better than cheeseburgers? Nopeā¦
Our best football coach and Dukeās best basketball coach came from military academies. So, who can we poach?
Todd Monken for every sport. Make him AD/Coach.

Jeff Monken?
