And I was at Terry Holland basketball camp in the summer of 1989. Highlight, besides playing the final in U-Hall and scoring six points, was the Onesty Hall pool night. (I was also in the same room in Humphreys that week as I was my first year at UVa — no shit).
I was there in '93, Fresh…how come you never drove me around? Probably still have the tattered free tee with '92 NIT Champs on the sleeve and a token picture posing in a Chris Alexander jersey with JJ.
Would UNC hire someone with no previous ties? They always struck me as a “keep it in the family” kind of deal, but I guess there’s no Roy Williams waiting in the wings this time.
I think they hate the “keep it in the family” concept now, from carousing their forums. Some hated the hire in real time, thinking their brand should get them the best coach available.
Not near my top choice at all, but the donors craving for Tony continuity. Tony’s style but a little more modern, as successful at the mid Major level as you can get. I know people shun Liberty but I don’t think McKay himself is anywhere near the kind of person Falwell Jr is.
Dad took the ODU job Spring of 94. Summer of 93 he just changed jobs from Fayetteville State to NC A&T. He only spent 1 year there before ODU. I guess he just wanted to go to JJ’s camp to have you drive him around?
Shoot, I remember there was talk of hiring dad Capel to replace JJ when we were trying to save the Ronald Curry commitment. Can @Hooandtrue even imagine how history would’ve changed if we hired Capel instead of Gillen?
Shoot, I think I’ve confused myself. I’ll explain later.
But I had to use the Dad Capel name cause the Dad is Jeff Capel II and hopefully not our next coach is Jeff Capel III, so if called one of them Junior, it could mean either of them.
Anyway, I think I confused myself because I’ve combined my memories of Oliver Purnell and Jeff Capel II into one person. So Purnell coached ODU from 91-94 and Radford before that starting in 88 so that’s why I associated Jeff Capel III with being a Virginian. And I’m not sure which of the 2 was supposed to keep Ron Curry from decommitting if we hired him.
My brother played at Laurel Park in the 1970s. His junior year (77-78), they were 0-20, (though he was honorable mention all-Piedmont ). I was in the 6th grade and was their statistician. There were a lot of beatdowns that season. In fairness to them, the Piedmont District was absolutely loaded through the 70s. The last win they had his sophomore season, my brother hit the game-sealing free throw against Bassett and their star Mike Helms (Wake Forest). They also had Ricky Dillard who played at George Mason.
I was supposed to go to Laurel Park, but instead went to a high school much closer to our home, Fieldale-Collinsville. Both of those schools are now middle schools.
