šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Byington is almost 50.

You can literally find 10 coaches with better resumes than Byington in the SEC.

There’s actually a pretty substantial difference. First and foremost, the candidates being listed all have won as head coaches. Ron has not. They also have a more differentiated basketball strategy vs.Tony Bennett, where Ron is Tony Bennett decaf, not even TB lite (evidenced by our lack of defensive acumen).

Byington also got a later start and inherited tough mid major jobs.

That and one coach might just fit better at a situation than another regardless of past accolades

Context is king.

Sanchez is 51!

Holding onto an assistant from the last era that was starting to really falter when we’ve been given a gift of being able to move on without paying a buyout and still on relative good terms with our title winning coach would be an insane decision.

We’ve been given an opportunity, and we shouldn’t waste it!

Ron reminds me of Johnny Dawkins demeanor and results.

It’s not just the past accolades. I like Byington. I just don’t think he’s anything special. Meh.

If UVA wants a really good P5 coach that might be poachable, try to hire Chris Beard. He’s a lot better than Byington. Of course UVA won’t do that because… But he would win & win big.

Beard prior to Texas Tech is no different than Byington prior to vandy. A round of 32 at Little rock and some D2 action

Vandy being above .500 is a miracle given last year

Sounds way too familiar

Not sure about that. Byington floundered around for several years at Georgia Southern.

Beard parlayed one year in the Sun Belt to a Big 12 job. Year 2 and 3 at TT he went to the Elite 8 and Title game.

Vandy isn’t going to finish above .500 in the SEC.

The Hoos lack of defense isn’t a big mystery. They don’t have any good on ball defenders. When it comes to sheer athleticism, UVA is at a disadvantage almost every night.

Pack-line isn’t exactly a one-year tutorial for bigs. It takes at least a year. That said, Ron does have to do a better job there. It’s downright comical & sad to watch Cofie cause so many breakdowns.

It’s not a mystery, it’s effort and athleticism. They’re just not motivated to do the work necessary to be even a decent defense. I don’t necessarily blame them, by the way. This isn’t what they signed up for. It’s a bit easier to put in the work for the best defensive coach of all time than it is when you got some guy named Ron yelling at you.

It’s healthier to bury your emotions and your heartfelt opinion. Let it simmer. Let it keep you up at night.

Perhaps your mind drifts to past LRA disagreements and stand-offs that have bothered you from the past, but you chose not to respond. Let it eat away at you.

That’s healthy…… but only if it bubbles up and all of your angst and vitriol and hatred comes bubbling up all at once….and you over-react to an otherwise innocuous and harmless suggestion.

That’s healthy. That’s we we keep logging on for. That’s what Forums are for.

Yeah, Warley wouldn’t have helped there at all.

They give effort. The athleticism isn’t there. I-Mac isn’t a shitty defender because he isn’t motivated. He’s just always been a shitty defender.

Man, Hamilton had a great thing going from 17-21 and Covid really ruined his best chance to win it all

Cofie’s breakdowns are just like those of Sheds. It is very hard for young big men to learn to play smart man defense on the perimeter. And we make it harder with high hedges and occasional double teams.
