St Johns CT soon
Odom is doing the dime store Pitino thing. Pressing and mucking it up
Canāt shoot for sh**
Grant too, tbh
Always amazes me when coaches cant shoot during games
I believe someone else said it already and captured it perfectly but as my first time intensively watching VCU, they are a team that wants to shoot a lot of threes and has a few pretty plays but outside Shulga they all donāt feel like great 3pt shooters (would have to look at season stats).
Also British Mamadi who we showed some interest started the 2nd half for VCU. Id take him at UVA. Not sure anyone else who still has eligibility worthwhile
#29 in 3P rate, #175 in 3P%.
Yeah that tracks with what Iām seeing.
Also that random euro kid who visited and committed to Indiana plays a lot like Shulga. If we retain anyone on staff they should try to flip him
Iām torn on whether that should be seen as a good thing for Odom or bad. On one hand, heās committed to what most see as the right formula in modern CBB. On the other, should you adjust to your roster strengths moreā¦I lean the latter, but in the big picture thereās an argument for the former.
I will say, VCUās team D is pretty solid and Odomās known for being more offense oriented. I like what Iām seeing in the types of defensive looks they are showing.
Literally had this same thought.
At Utah St Odom had an offense rated higher than Jerrod Calhounās current offense (relative to their field of competition) top 20. This year VCU is a top 25 defense team but only like a top 80 offense (which is still miles better than the last 5 years of UVA bball LOL).
Does show some versatility over his career of coaching approach
Itās going to be so jarring going from watching our methodological teams to the teams under whatever coach we have next. Not a statement good or bad, just jarring. It will take some adjustment in order to recognize whatās good and bad.
A lot of bad threes being taken by VCU. But they play with infensity. I know Odom isnāt Havoc but they are playing hard.
I can see how they blew us out in the scrimmage: This VCU team is pretty athletic and as you said intense. Which also explains the numerous turnovers in that game even with Warley
This will piss people offā¦and Iām sorry. But I think we overestimate our place in the pecking order. We all love us but itās not accurate and we wear rose colored glasses. And I am the biggest buyer of us, but we overestimate our program in the national scene.
We need to find a true-gem like CTB which is hard. But we are not indiana. We are not Villanova. And we are not UNC.
Any coach would go to those schools first- and I hate it.
P.S Indiana is a sleeping giant. Was there two weeks ago and Assembly Hall is ridiculous and special. Itās different than JPJ for sure.
Any recruit or coach that does visit both schools would be hard-pressed to not choose Indiana in my opinion this year.
And I will fight this premise, but I witnessed it and itās not even close so it is what it is
I donāt think any reasonable fan thinks weāre a blue blood. I think the problem is people think weāre the direct tier below.
So is Cameron Indoor and they are both shitholes (but special shitholes ). Agree we are not Indiana, Villanova, or UNC, but none of them have shown that they are special in hiring coaches despite those advantages. In fact, given the hiring record at those schools, Iām probably happy they are in the pool with us because we are more likely to grab the lifeline, they are more likely to grab the anchor.
Yup, and they canāt really out-athlete Dayton, with Key, et al
Watching Fermin throw the ball at the rim is tough to watch. He gets ORs and then throws the ball at the rimā¦
Man this VCU is frustrating. They take and miss so many 3ās. Get great looks and everyone is showed athletic, but they canāt shoot to save their lives. Their bigs canāt score within a foot either
Defense is chaotic and nuts tho
23 offensive boards
Yeah they are FIGHTING for these offense rebounds. Different mentality than we are used to.
