šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

They are so relentless. It’s fun to watch once you get past the bad shooting. I’m very intrigued

Just had a thought. If Odom is our next coach, Gertrude needs to stick around. He would so so well in a system like this

Def agree. But also he needs to stick around no matter what

With Odom you gotta play the ā€œWhat ifā€ game a little bit, because he’s never really fielded a complete team that doesn’t have at least one glaring weakness. And the question then becomes is it because of the limited resources he’s been given at the mid major level, or is it because he has a flaw in his roster construction.

But the major ā€œWhat ifā€ for him is, what if you gave him Chance Mallory, three athletic wings who can shoot, and a true 5 who can score around the rim along with being a shot blocker. You take his current schemes, with the pressure D and his ability to generate open 3’s in his offense, I think it would be a very fun team to watch.

Tony Bennett turned it down, but ok.

It’s all about the coach. You’ve gotta have the right type of mindset for a job like Indiana. TJ Otzelberger for example I doubt wants any part of that. I doubt he’s going anywhere but if so he’d probably prefer UVA. Ditto for Shaka. 70-80% of coaches are taking the IU job without hesitation but it’s not for everyone.

I tend to agree with Hav that Villanova is a ā€œbetter jobā€ as well…but it’s sorta the same thing. Depends on the coach, their background, what’s important to them. It’s maybe a 55/45 split of which job coaches would prefer, matters not in the grand scheme.

Dependent to me on what’s available to him in terms of roster building strategy. If he can afford to be a little picky about player types and still end up with a sufficient talent level, I think there’s to be said for picking your lane and sticking to it. I know I bring them up too often, but I do love how Houston has figured out that there are some guys who are like a B in other systems but an A+ in theirs. That’s the ideal in my mind.

Everything is circumstantial. IU and Nova are better jobs than us but I’m sure there’s coaches (like TB) out there who would take our job over theirs. We’re a better job than Iowa, but I’m sure there’s coaches in the upcoming carousel who covet the Iowa job more than us.

Just gotta find the right guy who wants to be here. It’s really like the show The Bachelor if you think about it. Who the fuck is getting that orange and blue rose.

I’m glad our future coach pulled out the win tonight. It was a really close. In all honesty, it looked like Penn might pull off the upset.

Yeah, Penn kinda stinks this year. In my day, they had Michael Jordan

Boy, there are two things that Steve Donahue excels at: losing college basketball game (338) and finding NBA wings for UVa (Dre and RD).

For reference, we will be celebrating the career of Tony Bennett tomorrow, and he was only able to lose 169 college basketball games. Half as many!

Chance Mallory
Donald Hand Jr/Rohde
Isaiah Coleman/Rohde
Thomas Haugh/Kaleb Banks
Someone at the 5 (Cofie if we pay him? Robinson or Buchanan if he stays)

Villanova Shaka

UVA Otz and idc at that point argue all you want about which coach got first dibs and went where haha

Carlisle to me is attractive in that it kind of solidifies us as a top program, even if it doesn’t work out. Hiring a championship-winning NBA coach is a big deal, and recruiting would be excellent under him.

I think people dramatically underestimate how desirable Charlottesville is as a hometown for a family. That is going to be a big part of the decision for any potential coach and their spouse.

I guess I forget this. Was he already here when he turned it down though? Or was he at Wash State?

He was at Wazzu. Amongst other reasons he may have turned it down, they had just canned his sister (as women’s head coach, I believe).

I love cville but most college towns are nice to raise families in. Ann Arbor and Bloomington certainly are. Where Nova is in Philly is nice too.

Agree except for where Nova is. Its like NOVA completely lacking any Soul

Bloomington sneaky real nice somehow. Ann Arbor never been

Man, I don’t know. I’ve always liked the Main Line towns. Then again, I get turned on driving by Merion GC, so that might have something to do with it.
