Think about all the little bonuses we gained via Tony’s relationship with Dick. Project that same benefit with Richard and Rick (who will eventually retire, right?)

Ryans dad was a pretty successful coach too…

If you asked Dave Odom who was the best player he coached, do you think he would say Ralph Sampson or Tim Duncan?

Ralph. But thats just my guess

We should hire Greg Gard

I think he did a pretty decent job at Minnesota. Especially since he was given the keys to a P5 program at a super young age with like 1 year of HC experience. And Minnesota is obviously one of the toughest P4-P5 jobs. If nothing else he proved that he wasn’t in over his head, even then. Now he has the benefit of more experience. His KenPom rankings at Minny were mostly in the top 50 except for 2 bad years. As high as 27th in 2020.

That would require me ignoring years of bashing him. I can do weeks or months of flipping an opinion but unfortunately I have to remain steadfast here.

Also think Gard just got really lucky with Tonje

He would compliment both players and not actually answer the question

You tell him if he doesn’t answer honestly Odom doesn’t get the job.

And then he answers Ralph since Ralph said his top two candidates are Carlisle and Odom

Controversial take maybe: There isn’t that big a difference if at all (and hell Odom has a chance to be much better than Byington) that if Byington’s buyout is really big Id rather just get Odom and use the $$$ in NIL

Trilly on Discord again talking about how Vanderbilt has A LOT of money for both football and basketball.

If we get Byington its going to be because of his connections and want of the UVA job. I’d just force Vanderbilt to heavily overpay him if needed, and then go for Odom and call it a day.

I dont think Byington is leaving Vandy

Are we sure Trilly knows something here? He could be speculating like the rest of us

And I think Im okay with that since the last week or so Ive found myself more accepting and even a little excited for Odom.

Odom with
Silas Demary Jr
Donald Hand Jr
Isaiah Coleman
Thomas Haugh or Kaleb Banks
Jacob Cofie (paid TJ Power’s money)

Andrew Rohde 6th man or inserted for a starter on the perimeter.
Anthony Robinson (Buchanan and Saunders probably gone)
Gertrude
And Chance Mallory or Derek Dixon Flipped
Sharma
David Punch
Kareem Stagg (flipped and redshirted)

Make it happen powers that be.

Yeah he’s been on top of Vandy stuff

edit: They spent $800k on AJ Hoggard, a proven power 5 starter for a top program. We spent $750k on TJ Power, who didn’t play last year

(When we got TJ Power I was like ā€œoh boy we did it but we probably had to overpay like 350k or somethingā€ā€¦)

Idk why but I don’t like that backcourt combo. It’s more of an arbitrary thing but I’d like at least one guy at guard shooting above 45% from 2 lol, though I do recognize that all three play in subpar offensive systems.

The main thing I don’t want to see if Odom gets the job here is him filling his backcourt entirely with guys like Joe Bamisile, aka super streaky chuckers. That would be the easiest way for his tenure to go the way of Kevin Keatts in my opinion, he needs one or two guys in his starting 5 that are gonna be high efficiency players within the chaos that his system can bring. I wouldn’t wanna be the team that goes 15-30 from 3 one night and then 1-30 the next, give me 10-30 every game if possible.

All three of those guys are perfectly solid players individually, but if we’re building a roster give me one of them, maybe two. Not all three.

That 1-3 would be able to lock up with size. I also do think their percentages are because of their current situation (see Dai Dai and Saunders on our team this year for example).

I’m not taking them because of where they currently are, but because they are all underclassmen who will benefit both from natural development/upperclassmen jump and being coached up. Ill also say all 3 are actually low-turnover prone and are sound with the ball somehow

edit: in this hypothetical chance mallory would end up starting at the one anyways

Hasn’t Odom done a really good job recruiting the portal? Looks like most of his main contributors are transfers so I’m guessing he’s gotten pretty good at it

Yeah. My main takeaway from this is that BOTH Odom and Byington built entirely new teams and are on the cusp of being tournament teams and we didn’t even come close (even with Warley who is far from some godsend).
