I guess the argument to differentiate between them would be that Byington is doing it in his first year, whereas Odom is doing it in his 2nd. His VCU team, while yeah filled with a bunch of transfers, returned six guys who were in the rotation last year and has a bunch of 5th and 6th year seniors.
Also Byington is doing it in the SEC where his team was picked to finish last in the conference, and Odom is doing it in the A-10 where his team was picked to finish 1st.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but as people lay out the list of top targets, I don’t see any of them saying yes, so Richard has become more intriguing to me. I’m still not ready to say I want him at Virginia, but I just don’t think many of the top tier guys would say yes to the job, and somebody has to fill it. He has experience at the P5 level and success in the MWC is no joke. I’ll be curious to see if he moves on from New Mexico this year. I think eventually he will, but he and his family seem to genuinely love it there. Will he jump to Virginia if he didn’t take the Louisville (obviously other factors in play) job last year? Worth monitoring I guess.
My mind right now: “Well we can give Ron a 2-3 year contract with no buyout since we have the advantage and run the Dai Dai McKneely Rohde Buchanan Cofie lineup that finally is gelling together, giving us the first chance at actually continuity in ages”
Am thankful the season has become more fun to watch now with the team clicking a little.
My internal dialogue about Ron coaching is all over the place lol
“They’re 12-12, defense hasn’t been great, TJ Power stinks, they got blown out by California for god’s sake!”
“Yeah but they lost three one score games to Memphis, SMU, Tech ending was weird. Offense is good, Dai Dai and Rohde appear to have pulses, Anthony Robinson and Blake are good, get to keep E2 and Cofie for another year.”
Thrown into a poop show with one week to prep and is scrapping wins together. Team is scrapping and the staff is operating on all cylinders. I think you give Ron a 2-3 year deal with a buyout. Doesn’t seem like a great year to be space searching anyway. I’m on the Ron train 100%
