I know (think?) Fresh was joking about a 2 year interim, but that might be a very UVa innovation!
How did it compare (attendance wise) to previous years with CTB (considering mid-week and buy game)? Just curious.
And if theyâre winning games.
Thing is, itâs not really her call. Itâs the BOV and big donor alums that get to make that call, and they will most certainly want to hire their own guy who they can then have some of their own skin in the game on.
For me, I want them to extend Ron now. Give the existing team a security blanket and let them play more freely. Maybe Ron is the guy. Maybe he isnât - but when Carla mentioned a national search out loud I immediately thought âoh noâ.
We are in limbo as a program. Thatâs not good. Especially considering how stable we have been for 15 years. Tony put this in motion, but Carla needs to calm things down. Easiest way to do that is to show faith in Ron by giving him an extension. It doesnât need to be long and itâll be significantly cheaper than Tony.
Just my two cents.
I actually thought it was pretty good all things considered, although the student section seemed light. These early season cupcakes havenât been drawing well the last few years even under Tony.
I am starting to think you stay with Ron actually. Almost no matter what this season. Watching him in game 1 I feel good about him
If they give him the job now and he goes 15-15 (current projection on kenpom), do you think thereâd be stability or did UVa just waste millions of dollars?
if the team goes 15-15 then so be it. Tony openly talked about this be a two year window. Allow Ron to see that through. Fight like hell to get a PG in (Mallory or portal) and keep the group together.
Youâre also probably paying half of what Bennett would have earned.
UVAâs last regular season game is Saturday, March 8th. ACC Tournament runs Mar 11 to 15.
If UVAâs season comes to an end in Charlotte, it would be criminal if Carla and Jim Ryan didnât already know who they could replace Ron with if they want to. They can get through the tough football decisions over the next month or two, and come January spend two solid months vetting every top mid-major HC and negotiating with their agents. And come the Hoosâ final buzzer of the season, theyâll know if that coach is better than Ron or not, and can make/announce a decision the following day.
No.
Usually thereâs a good crowd for the opener. Looked pretty light to me this year. Of course the official numbers are bogusâŚ13K+ compared to 14K last year. Day after the election probably didnât help though.
Are you suggesting we redshirt the interim coach? Itâs got a nice ring to itâŚ
Hasnât Ron been redshirting since be came back from Charlotte?
Actually kinda not joking.
2 year interim would kill recruiting tho, wouldnât it?
-Interim poster Haney
Yes⌠it was super empty
TB leaving already killed recruiting didnt it?
If players all stay with Ron why not keep Ron.
Not sure what good candidate from the outside would take the job currently. Maybe I am just saying make Ron or Jason the guy now
Sorry, but this timeline does not come even close to allowing enough hours to consult with the message board geniuses on LRA. How are you going to conduct a thorough coaching search without talking to folks who have watched YouTube highlights from at least the last 2 peach jams?
But why? We are a great job opening. Why would we struggle to find a good coach from the outside?
And no offense to Ron, but we can hire a coach with a much better resume than him (up to you whether you think theyâll actually be better, but theyâll be better on paper without a doubt unless Ron like goes to a sweet 16 this year). Ronâs current record is one very unexciting stint at Charlotte where he was probably near being fired and if you squint at it real hard you can convince yourself he did alright given difficult circumstances. We can hire a guy who did much better at a similar mid major! Or maybe even had more success than that.
When we hired Tony Bennett our team was in the gutter and we got a guy with a Sweet 16 and back to back tourney appearances plus a national coach of the year title. Iâm not saying weâll get that this year - depends on the pool and what other jobs are open - but we will have good options. Ron has to actually make a strong case he should be hired not just get the job cause Tony wanted that for him and heâs already here. Our program is at too high of a level for that.
