šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

I think you have to, right? Otherwise you’re kinda posing. I’m sure it’s possible to cook up some messaging about a transition to make it seem less like you’re erasing things (e.g. set up a 5 Pillars historical exhibit somewhere in JPJ), but every coach has their own culture thing that they want to put into place.

I think the options are basically (1) embrace it, (2) respect it, or (3) ignore it.

I think 2 is a nice middle way.

Actively physically tearing down stuff that refers to 5 pillars (rather than just replace in the ordinary course) feels a bit extreme/unnecessary. But tbh I have no idea what a typical physical transition would look like.

Just bid on Willifords shoes on the Ebay auction. That’s as far as I can go to support retaining the staff.

I think that if we retain anyone from the current staff (even if it’s Kyle, Chase, or Zay) it could make it an easier transition from a cultural perspective.

I think it would be a good idea to retain one assistant and/or one staffer. No matter who gets the job. I’m not sure where we are on the likelihood of Odom but he’s directly connected to Coach O (several years together at Charlotte) and indirectly to J-Willy (I think J Willy took his spot at AU under JJ). Not really sure about the other likely candidates…

Holdovers have been more common in Football, but with the growth of hoops staffs, seems like it’s more likely now.

Apparently the Indiana ad told a couple local aau teams in a call that the top candidate for Indiana currently is a ā€œnon-collegeā€ affiliated person and they have two weeks to say yes or no. That and the recent plane tracking from Bloomington to Boston… lol they are really going after Brad Stevens for real

We touched the hot stove once, but maybe we should touch it again?

Of course if it’s Stevens, that’s a different story.

I contacted newly single Jessica Alba and have given her two weeks to accept my offer of matrimony.

They’re definitely gonna make a run at Stevens then turn to May. Hopefully that’s where their search ends.

Really interesting point. I think Haney has the right idea with respect it. Whoever the new HC is—even if it’s Ron—has to establish his own program, identity, culture in order to succeed.

But ignoring or memory-holing Tony’s legacy would be a really bad way to start.

did you send a PJ to pick her up? She might accept if you do.

Even if it ends there… We’re then directly competing against Michigan in a pool that looks pretty similar to ours I’d guess.

That’s fair. In some ways Michigan is tougher competition than IU.

I’m selfishly hoping they go in the Beard or Pearl direction. Not guys we’ll consider and don’t think Ole Miss or Auburn’s list will look to similar to ours.

Honestly I think Auburn would make a run at Beard if Pearl left for Indiana.

Man if I was May I wouldn’t leave Michigan for IU, but I guess he was a manager or something there right? Good thing going at Michigan and the fans are happy, similar caliber program

May did do the classic ā€œI’m focused on Michiganā€ distract but don’t deny when asked if he was interested in Indiana

I would agree, but this does come down to his answer to ā€œDo you want to ride the tiger?ā€ And I think CBB tends to select for coaches who would answer that with ā€œYeah I do, and I’m gonna be the best tiger rider you’ve seenā€

May leaving Michigan for IU would be bad for us, because we are more in Michigan’s lane than IU’s lane, but two factors in our favor:

  1. it seems highly unlikely that May would move after year 1, esp. since that IU job coming open was fairly likely last year
  2. even if he does, we may benefit from having our guy mostly lined up before Michigan has to scramble

My guess is May gets a lot of goodies from Michigan and stays put
