With a slight adjustment this applies to Ron as well. You donāt get points for not winning when āput in a difficult situation.ā
Iāve consulted the book of Ron. In itās pages you will find truth. The answers are there for those who believe. For out of faith the size of a mustard seed, an empire will rise like a Phoenix over Arizona.
In Ron we trust.
Coaches watch:
Odom 6pm vs UMass
Hoiberg 6:30pm at Penn St
Byington at Kentucky 7pm
Bob Richy vs Bucky round two 7:30
Calhoun vs San Jose St 9:30pm
Richard Pitino at Boise St 10pm
A lot of fun games tonight though (UNC NC State)
Man I forgot Frank Martin was at UMass. Was a huge fan of his at Kansas St
edit: Bamisile with some atrocious minutes. Needs some bench
Edit 2: OH SHIT ODOM BENCHED HIM. future UVA coach?
Id be more than fine with Odom.
edit: VCU just doubled the post. Odom has been eliminated from UVA contention. I donāt care that it led to a turnover and transition 3.
edit: This VCU team would finish top 2-3 in the ACC. Not sure if that says more about VCU or the ACC
Yeah, this VCU group is solid. A lot of seniors, so if we hired Odom, curious who he might bring with him.
Brandon Jennings Jr (who we briefly checked out) and British Mamadi (who we also briefly looked at out of HS).
I think he would work the portal well and keep Rohde and Robinson at a minimum. Also might be able to regain Tobi Lawal from the Hokies and lock in Chance Mallory (Isnāt Mallory the same height as that UMBC pg)
Donāt remember. Is Odom committed to this trapping defense?
Just have visions of a cadre of 500K+ PG running us out the gym.
Donāt think so, heās doing it this year because he has the athletes for it to be effective but he didnāt do it at Utah State.
I donāt mind some full court pressure as long as itās not your be all/end all defensively. Generally speaking VCU is good on defense in their half court sets too.
Iām not gonna purport to know concretely what makes a coach a good fit for us, or any high major program for that matter. Every guy thatās been mentioned in this thread has his own flaws, or caveats, or something that at least makes a portion of our fanbase hesitate when theyāre mentioned as an option. So inevitably a lot of these opinions just come down to eye test and gut feeling about coaches. Not particularly useful measures, and thankfully not the main factor that our administration is gonna use to make their decision (I would hope at least).
With that being said, I just really like the way this VCU team plays under Odom. Not really sure if thereās a better way to explain it than that. They play super hard with confidence on both ends of the floor, typically generate good looks on offense, hit the offensive glass hard, get teams into bad looks on defense and force turnovers at a high clip. Sometimes the pace of play can get a bit frantic and things look sloppy, but overall they just play a fun brand of basketball that reflects a lot positive analytical trends happening in the sport (good O Rebounding rate, high 3 point volume, good 2pt D and low 3pt D volume). Maybe thatās because theyāve got a bunch of upperclassman and 5th/6th year seniors, or because they have better than average talent and athleticism for the A-10 level. I donāt know but generally speaking I like what I see.
I really hope the Richard Pitino smoke is just Pitino Jr being really arrogant.
I think Odom would be a monumentally better fit. Hell he had Pitino Jr beat at New Mexico if not for some Donovan Dent Heroics (there was a stretch where Donovant dent went ham that created the gap). I think Odom is the better coach, has shown more versatility in his coaching style, AND has familiarity with UVA and the DMV and North Carolina region.
RIP Fred Hoiberg to UVA
Heās about to break his other hand
Pretty sure Frank stepped up and took care of the student who won that halftime contest but insurance denied him a $100K prize. Probably the last coach Iād assume would do something like that.
Odom is the best of the non splash names. Orchestrated one of the biggest upsets of all time, and twice now has taken a mid major and materially improved in year 2. Add that to family ACC roots, and having been in mid Atlantic last 2 years.
13 3ās made for VCU tonight, blowing out a not very good UMass team.
Meanwhile Mark Byington is up on Kentucky at Rupp a little before halftime.
Tend to agree but damn, the talent we could accumulate under Pitino Jr is inticing.
I think Odom could get some talent. He would do quite well with the local-ish guys.
Longtime readers will know Iām an Odom skeptic, but Iām not super worried about his talent accumulation here. Would rather have him than lil Richard for sure.
The UMBC point guard has been a comparison point for Mallory for me for a while. If we hire Odom his recruitment should be short, just roll the tape.
Has Odom recruited Mallory at all to VCU?
