Just my terminology.
I donât think a retread is coming to UVA and winning a national title. Could be a good floor piece.
But I think UVAâs best shot at winning the national title is getting the ânext best thingâ or someone who has yet to prove themselves at the power 5 level (I donât consider WSU as a power 5 school even though it technically was/ conference realignment showed as much)
Non-HR P5 coach (guy who is not currently doing super great in his current gig). Cronin fits there because heâs an angry leprechaun and UVa fans like their traditions of not having angry leprechauns as their head coach.
Any leprechauns have to be happy (see Gillen).
(Would like to point out that Iâm 1/8 leprechaun so this is not an insensitive post)
this is of shaping up like the gillen searchâŚhe was most logical candidate and was quickly in seat. of course that was after the season so we didnât have to wait through 5 months of rumors and speculation. but it sorta feels like odom has always been the logical fit and will probably be the next coach.
I also think you want a guy who can hit the ground running in this era which would require understanding UVA and the local regions.
Which is why even though I was gassing up Jerrod Calhoun heâs falling down my personal preference list. (although he has some west coast familiarity)
lol why did we hire Gillen coming off a 13-16 season? I see he made the elite 8 the year before but still
(his Xavier run was impressive, especially when they were mid Major, but his Providence stint was a meh/kinda lines up with his UVA stint outside one hot run)
Yeah, it was mostly the Xavier record and then the elite 8 run with Croshere (prime remembering some guys material) and shamgod.
I think the meh year the next was mostly chalked up to losing Shamgod early the year before without a plan B (early departures were more rare back then).
downfall of revenue sports. Womenâs swimming is killing it.
What scares me about about a guy like Eric Olen for example is that for the last 20 years all he has know is UC San Diego as an assistant and then head coach. What he has done and is doing is extremely impressive, but he was also there for 10 years as an assistant and then given 10 more years to build the program (even if he is still on the young side).
Odom and retaining Vandross would let them go ham in the portal the moment he takes office while I feel like a random will take their time getting their footing and trying to get their pitch and what not.
Weâd be hiring off the Pete Gillen tree directly and via Tom Herrion with Byington. And the Terry Holland tree via Seth Greenberg and Dave Odom with Odom. Oh and the Pete Gillen tree via Tom Herrion with Pitino. All in the family, right?
This is a very simple question to answer: because of the system. The system may not have been the primary reason we won those six games, but it is legitimately the only reason we were in a position to do so. Could it have been better? Sure. Should it have evolved? Definitely. But that system took us to the top of the mountain so I am loathe to be overly critical of it.
I would actually argue that the system was less of a problem in recruiting than is commonly appreciated. This is a totally subjective and therefore unwinnable argument butâŚHow do I phrase this? The system seemed to be more of a problem for the guys we recruited specifically more so than a problem for recruiting more generally. Iâm out of time so Iâll give a simple illustrative example: Trevor keels.
While Iâm supportive of Pitino, I do wonder if the recent noise is intentional misinformation/misdirection to hide our real target. In that case, it would be someone other than Odom. Someone we wouldnât want linked to us too early. No idea who that someone would be.
