šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Is there other evidence that proves Odom is Carla’s candidate? Sorry if it’s been posted on here before… just joined today.

Remember when the first ā€œTony is going to retireā€ rumors started popping up last spring and the in-house rumor was Dawn Staley?

I. Am. Afraid. Of. The. Splash. Hire.

I wouldn’t underestimate the amount of negative recruiting related to our style of play we had to deal with. It was really harmful. We were able to recruit pretty well in spite of it, but it still really made things tougher.

Personally I’d love Dawn but it’s not gonna happen.

Nothing public that I’m aware of. And I don’t know much about the whispers. Nobody tells me anything!

Welcome aboard

I’m generally comfortable with the LRA consensus candidates and would be happy with any of them (Odom, Pitino, Smart, Byington). I’d probably be happy with most successful current P5 coaches (probably not Capel or a few others). Probably would be unhappy with a college assistant or anyone from the NBA. A non P5 HC besides Odom or Pitino, I’m probably more wary of, but Calhoun sounds intriguing, the others not so much. I’m very wary of a Dawn Staley hire, but I’d support her to help. I’d be devastated with a Ron Sanchez hire.

I do think Carla Williams did learn from the Tina Thompson hire to not go for a uniquely unqualified splashy hire

Thanks! Seems like I’m a little bit in the minority after reading a number of posts but I’m very hopeful it will be Odom. Who cares about the UMBC game? The brand of basketball he plays is exciting. Up-tempo both offensively and defensively; a welcome change from the past few seasons. He also seems to be a wonderful guy. Keeps his calm on the sidelines. Tony-esque in that regard.

We’ll see what happens but Odom is lightyears better than Pitino in my opinion.

She was also a strength coach.

Yep. Overalll fitness guru. You havent lived til you saw Hav in tights doing aerobics at 6am taught by Leslie

I’ve seen some sentiment along the lines of if Odom wins 30 games and they make a tourney run, then he should be our choice, but is there a point where we are no longer his choice? Whether the vibes are too good to leave VCU or a ā€œbetterā€ job comes calling?

Probably only if the Carolina job opened but I doubt they’d hire him anyways.

Kind of my thoughts too! I’m hoping they’ve already been in negotiations but have no clue how much that happens in season.

It’s all guesswork. We don’t know for certain he’d take our job today. But it seems very likely.

If he goes to a final 4 or something, it might make it very tough to leave. But that seems pretty unlikely. First they have to get in (probably like 67% at this point). One win would be nice. Two would be great. Anything after that and things could get complicated, I suppose.

VCU has been open they are going to put $5 million into roster building with revenue sharing. No idea if UVA is doing the same with football and also Baseball and Olympic sports

Also begs the question of if the $20 million overall cap for athletics is set in stone or if NIL collectives will still exist and do under the table deals to add onto any public salary cap

I am basically positive there will be fairly rampant cap circumvention under the new system. Might take a minute to figure out how they’ll do it, but the collectives aren’t going away.

Hiring Dawn would be a very UVa thing to do. Uva given the culture would definitely be a top contender for first men’s program to hire a female coach - probably top 3 in ncaa.

That being said - there’s such a small chance it wound be successful and it would most likely fail miserably. Recruiting would be impossible without a giant NIL and the men’s game is a different beast. It would be the equivalent of a high school coach jumping straight to the nba in terms of the speed of the game.

Bottom line is that she’s not going anywhere - she’s in a fantastic spot. That kind of progression would require spending some years as an assistant for a men’s team liie Becky Hammond.

The ā€œsplashā€ hire to watch for is realistically probably Carlisle.

Which could work, but I’m skeptical. Just hire a guy with college head coaching experience please.

Just rumors, but rumors being spread of an early retirement from one of the power 5 Texas schools. Everyone is speculating Jamie Dixon, which would insane cause that means David Punch will be in the portal (and both UVA and Odom’s VCU in his top 4).

However age wise Sampson makes more sense

I’ll go ahead and say he would take our job today if offered. I feel confident in that.

I would guess Dixon just based on how their respective seasons are going. Sampson is at the top of his game right now and his son is already coach-in-waiting, so it’s not like he needs to guarantee succession by leaving when things are going well.

But I suppose these things are so idiosyncratic that it could be Sampson.
