Donāt think either affect our search too much. Houston would hire Sampsonās son, and I donāt think TCUās pool will look very much like ours at all.
Sampson makes the most sense: that team will lose a lot this year, heās had a good run and can hand it over to his son while the vibes are still high. Donāt want to risk a lackluster season or two jeopardizing that for his son.
Couple this with Carla understanding the landscape, and then over-thinking everything. My gut tells me we will be underwhelmed or mildly satisfied by the hire when it is announced. People and institutions seek safety in times of strife. We are in a giant puddle of strife.
If our football team was a top 20 team, it would be an easier basketball hire for Carla. This is a big hire for her, actually a career-defining hire, and Iām assuming she will choose safety and the PR support from the community at this juncture. Most would. Canāt blame her.
Said it before, will say it again⦠Carlisle is currently running 4th in the East. Heās not walking away prematurely from a Playoff team. Meaning the soonest he would be eliminated is late April, no less than a full month and a half after UVAās season ends. The position is not sitting vacant that long.
Agree. He would be awesome but it aināt happening. However, if he steps down for āhealth reasons on the next three weeks, I reserve the right to change my opinion.
I think Rick is willing to advise and might end up with UVA at some point, but donāt think heās really to keen on jumping into the college system as currently constituted and deal with players that are even more immature than NBA rookies.
I doubt even a long term contract at Utah St will have that big a buyout. Could just be a nice present to get Utah St some extra cash in return for the opportunity to coach there and raise his platform
I was thinking about Littlepage recently. Was he the GOAT of hiring coaches: Bennett, OāConnor, Bronco (weird ending but damn good hiring), and Lars. Yeah he busted on Mike London, so he owns that too. But still a remarkable hit rate and a bunch of hardware to show for it. He didnāt get sidetracked by the shiny metal object, but instead cerebral guys capable of building programs, not just out-recruiting the competition.
Iām not anti-Carla, but her track record falls remarkably short in comparison. I donāt know who UVA puts on their informal āhiring committeeā, but if I were them I would be sure to invite Craig.
VCU plays at Richmond tomorrow. Now that I feel confident Odom is the right move, put your life savings on Richmond money line. I donāt care how terrible Richmond is this year
Littlepage works for a coaching search firm. I donāt know if itās the one weāre using, but I doubt Littlepage is doing any free informal consulting for us since thatās his actual day job.
āApparently Calhoun has a new contract sitting on his desk from USU that is unsigned that includes a minimum $2M NIL commitmentā
From Trilly. Still think itās a good faith contract to reward Utah St for giving him the opportunity to earn his eventual power 5 coaching spot; they can invest the buyout money they get in NIL
My dad had this picture proudly on display for decades. Relevant to the coaching discussion, included are Terry Holland, Jeff Jones, Dave Odom, Jim Larranaga, Ricky Stokes, and Rick Carlisle.
