🏀 Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

It seems like just yesterday Shaka was one step ahead of the posse in Texas.

Probably about the same time Pitino was dodging fireworks and unfiltered cigarette smoke at various arenas in Greece. And now they’re playing in Big East semis and some jagoff on StubHub wants me to pay hundreds of dollars to see it.

If the outcome is sustaining the success of the Bennett tenure (competing for conference titles, 1-seeds, and a few long runs in the NCAAs), then I agree with MS in his opinion — and, yes, it’s opinion for us both — that Odom isn’t the right guy.

I’ve given my reasons — mostly based on the fact that he hasn’t demonstrated sustained success anywhere, and any success at a high major, because only at UMBC did he stay longer than two years, and he’s never coached a high major.

But I’m not going to go on social media or anywhere that’s a purely public forum and say that the particular hire is a mediocre outcome-based one because . . . I just don’t know — that’s the scary thing: There’s no record either way. Not enough information, and no history of HS recruiting success that leads me to see sustained success at a higher level. At least without additional data points (and his assistant coaching record isn’t a tiebreaker because in 19 years as assistant or GA, the teams he supported were under .500 and went to only one NCAAT).

I — and I hope Mikey does, too — want to be wrong about him because I have a fever, and the only thing that that can cure it is more basketball — precisely, UVa basketball between November and early April.

Staples is currently campaigning for it. Of course, you would have my vote.

3 points shooting contest to decide who gets it

Which is super ironic, given folks were genuinely underwhelmed with CTB’s hiring.

So if Odom holds out for Nova I still see a scenario where Carlise gets his arm twisted to come rescue the program from having to settle on high risk leftover candidate, help transistion the program to post NIL NBA style free agency and roster building, and groom an up and coming top notch AC as his replacement in 2 years.

Sitting here debating if I’m going to rain all over someone’s Carlisle parade yet again in this thread…

… yes, yes I will…

The Pacers are a near lock for the playoffs as the current 5 seed in the East and like a half game behind the 4 seed. Carlisle is not leaving a playoff team in the home stretch of the regular season.

Nor is UVA going to wait until May at the earliest for the Pacers to be eliminated for Carlisle to become available.

Nor is Carlisle going to “soft accept” the UVA job now, keep coaching the Pacers for 1-2 more months, and just name an Associate Head Coach to salvage the locker room and rebuild the roster through the Portal without him.

OK, I can accept this for Carlisle but AI Wooden still has a shot right?

Saw this and had flashbacks — and very bad memories — of being able to watch a F4 game with my parents as a 6-year-old.

If Odom’s the guy, you absolutely want VCU making the NCAAs where they’ll likely lose the first weekend and not the NIT where they could be playing for weeks longer.

mg234 on other site claiming Jacquies sources on coaching search are better than HGN’s. We know whats what.

The NIT might not be enough to keep the head coach in place.

HGN has already said that “sources” for coaching searches are very different from recruiting. I don’t think anyone has great sources for coaching searches.

Does Villanova opening concern us that Odom might be coaching there next year instead of here?

Yeah especially with a roster of seniors. NITs are good for a young team to get some run in a tourney setting imo.

Define “concern”. It’s only a concern if Odom is the guy you want / UVA wants above all others and yet we lose him to a peer.

But if there’s someone UVA likes, or that you like (or end up liking), just as much (maybe even more) and we get that guy instead, then there’s nothing to worry about.
