And…isn’t the buyout high?

His mom was my elementary school principal in Salem- she’s a wonderful lady. This obviously means he would do a great job here.

My mom knows his mom somehow (church maybe?) and has always wanted him to come back and coach at Tech lol. Would love to steal that dream from her, maybe she’ll start rooting for the hoos.

Last nights game is a true reality check!! We will not win another tournament game until we are able to sign Power 5 athletes. With our schemes and tactics we can often look good against mediocre opponents but will continue to get our ****** handed to us against top 25 competition. Nothing against Ron or the Bennett franchise but we need a change to remain a relevant program. Without Dai Dai on this team they would have struggled to score 30 points last night.

Yeah, the reason Byington isn’t discussed more isn’t that folks are not intrigued (IMO), it’s because of the Vandy timing.

I’ve also raised it about Odom, but I wonder if there are small p political issues about us hiring a guy from another state school

Do you think that will really matter in a VCU to Virginia move? I feel like VCU knows what they are and has (smartly) embraced being a stepping stone job.

Odom has to make the tourney this year for us to even consider him right? This will be his best roster for the foreseeable future as it’s stacked with seniors. Next year will be a rebuild (so he’s probably trying to get promoted to a new job elsewhere before he has to face that).

Losing to a mediocre Seton Hall team is not particularly helpful in that regard. But there’s plenty of good opportunities for them left.

Yeah he absolutely has to make the tournament this year, but I expect he will. Their team is legit. I’m not too worried about that side of it.

Yeah, I think so too. Details will matter, but basically yes

I’d need VCU to win the A10 for sure, and comfortably really before I’d feel decent about hiring Ryan Odom. Couldn’t care less about a November game. Give me consistently top tier in your own league, winning titles on a regular basis. Good career postseason results are nice too, or at least not having bad results.

Chris Gerlufsen should probably be on the list, looks like USF has a solid team this year that will probably be 2nd in the WCC. Already beat a good Boise team by double digits, blew a double digit lead to Memphis last night. He’s a Randolph Macon grad and is somewhat of an offensive guru.

Still probably like Wes Miller as my top realistic option. I think he’d really be the refreshing change of pace from a recruiting and style of play perspective. I think he really understands this era of college hoops and still has the coaching chops to build something special. Back to back top 25 classes and he just got a crystal ball for a 5 star that would probably mean 3 straight.

Byington would be great, Sanchez will have earned it if he gets it, Odom is a safe option that would make most happy. Then you have guys like Huss, Gerlufsen, etc who could coach their way into consideration with big seasons.

Vandy’s a private school so it’s hard to find accurate info. I couldn’t find any buyout info for Kyle Smith at Stanford either.

Jerry Stackhouse’s buyout when he was fired was reported to be over 15 mil, but that doesn’t mean the buyout to leave Vandy was the same number though.

There’s a reason they call him Mark Buyoutington.

Need to host a tourney for all prospective UVA coaches. Winner gets the job. The catch? You advance by covering the spread, roster handicap. Odom’s boys came back to lose by 4 to Vandy, HE is your new Dean and Markel Families Head Basketball Coach

All due respect, but Byington doesn’t meet this criteria.

He had a great season last year but before that his mid-major results were pretty pedestrian and would pale in comparison to say what Wes Miller did in his stint at UNCG.

Doesn’t mean he’s not going to be great, but I certainly wouldn’t view him as some sort of no brainer based on what he’s collectively done to date.

Long thread, so apologize if this name has been floated, but how about Kirk Penney?

Our offense was great when he was here as an assistant. Think he is doing well at Wisconsin and has helped their offense become more modern.

No HC experience that I am aware of but I am ok with that. He knows UVa, has had success here and is an offensive savant; which we need in the WORST possible way.

Go HOOS. Beat SJU.

I think this is the redflag for me. Before really thinking about it, I was all about Luke Murray. But UVA is a place that needs an established head coach with a proven scheme (both football and basketball)

After we fired Leito we were able to hire a National Coach of the Year away from a power 6 program (albeit Washington St). We can do much better than risking it with someone with no HC experience.
