I wish I could ignore your posts, bot, but then fully half my feed would be hidden replies.

Do it anyways. I believe in you

Ok I’ll give it a shot

Buckyball has Samford looking pretty good against this season. They don’t play a lick of defense but goddamn is their offense fun to watch.

Am also starting to become more intrigued in Ben McCollum, even if he doesn’t have the Dragon seal of approval.

Nothing against Sanchez, or the kids on the current roster, but I’m just ready for a reset.

Scoring in the low 50’s against good competition is ok when you’re winning, but when you’re losing, it sucks.

Whoever the new coach is, I hope it’s someone with a very different offensive philosophy…even if it means our defense isn’t top 10.

A new offensive philosophy would help us in the portal and with recruiting.

I guess we can cross Mary Baldwin’s coach off the list since they lost to Longwood, 97-40. On the other hand, we might add Prairie View’s coach. They are 1-8 and the only team they have beaten was the College of Biblical Studies Ambassadors (I know it sounds like I’m making that up, but I’m not). However, today, Prairie View hung in there with Mississippi State, only losing by 7, 91-84.

If we are eliminating any coach with a bad loss this year, we may have to start looking at the high schools for possibilities (even there it will be a select group that can avoid an unexpected defeat across a season)

New to this site…Let me ask you (everyone) a question…

Is there anyone in here who supports the idea of Sanchez being retained/having the interim tag removed?

I think the vast majority of us want to see where things are in March. There was some talk right after the Nova game that maybe we found our guy and it was time to stabilize things, but that chatter died down after Baha Mar and SMU.

I think what most of us are doing is trying to predict the ending, rather than saying ā€œthe time is now to do XYZ.ā€

My view: I haven’t seen anything from Ron that makes me think he’ll be here in a year, but he’s got 19 ACC games + Memphis + ACC tourney to turn that around.

Which is kinda all we can do because we are on a basketball message board and not athletic directors or employees of their search firm (I think; Carla if you’re out there, post in the Arby’s VIP thread - it’s a safe space)

I’m a novice on buyouts - what’s considered a large buyout? 12 million for a bball coach seems steep. Is it actually though?

Our school donated a few million for art…. If we can’t get enough for a hoops coach then this school is doomed.

Brass tacks:

CRS has a sub-500 coaching record. If he wasn’t an honorary Bennett this would not be debatable.

I am skeptical that Ron gets his career record on the plus side this year.

Yes we / I do Junebug

Please discuss

Even beyond that, while at Charlotte CRS was below .500 in CUSA league play. Sure, he took over a struggling team and had a rough first season, but his conference record was still under .500 even if you take away that first season. He only had winning records in conference play in 2 of his 5 seasons there. He came in 5th in the conference twice, as his best results.

He seems like a great guy, I certainly wouldn’t fire him in-season, and hey, maybe he’ll catch lightning in a bottle. But I think its fairly likely he’s not the long-term answer.

Edit - To get his career In-Conference record (across CUSA and the ACC) up to .500 this season, he’d need to go 16-3 the rest of the way.

Yeah 16-3 is not happening IMHO.

Just to be clear…You do support retaining him/removing the interim tag?

If so, how and when did you arrive at that conclusion?

It’s a kind of a false premise. I don’t think anyone is advocating for hiring Ron Sanchez right now. Well except Doug. Just some are more open to the possibility, depending on how the team progresses over the season.

I’m not. He’s been thrown into an awful situation…taking over a team right before the season, mostly made of players he doesn’t even know very well. There’s no chance for him to make his own mark on the team really…the best he can do is show that he can keep a group together enough to make progress over the season. But even then, he’s doing it with a team that isn’t really is put together by and for someone else that he’s basically just trying his best to pretend to be.

I would have rather seen them give the interim tag to Williford. It would have been just as hard and it’s not likely he would have kept the job either…but it’s at least possible he might have taken things in his own direction here and there. Given himself a chance to show something anyway.
