šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

We didn’t get lucky there was a clear pedigree that would suggest that CTB would be a successful coach. We acquired him because we are an attractive destination for college basketball coaches.

We were lucky that he wasn’t just a good coach but rather a truly great one. But there is a big space between CTB and Keatts. A lot of those outcomes are pretty darn good and honestly are better than the past five years. Maybe we land one maybe we don’t. But we are going to be positioned to do so

Loyola’s 2018 FF run was greatly assisted by early losses by the top seeds in their region (admittedly 2 caused by Loyola themselves).

Edit: sorry, didn’t mean to discount Moser’s success. He’s one of my top targets and would be very happy if we hired him.

@jphat007 I’m a strong believer that luck (or normal variation if you’re a stats nerd) plays a huge role in life. But it plays a role on both ends. I think we got lucky with Tony and unlucky with Gillen and Leitao (and unlucky at the end of the JJ era that he got a bit sloppy in his ā€œreasonable human being, unlikely to commit violent felonyā€ due diligence).

But I feel like you’re saying that latter-era JJ, Gillen, Leitao — that’s our natural state and Tony 14-19 was just luck. I’d argue that the 1996-2013 run was as much bad luck as the halcyon Tony era was good luck.

Yeah I just don’t have the hope that this administration and president can navigate that again. And I do think it was some luck. But we can agree to disagree there.

I like your optimism and pray like hell you are right and I’m wrong. I’m just nowhere near as confident in either our administration or UVA’s standing in the current college sports arena.

I’m also not confident at UVa’s place in the college sports firmament, but that’s separate from good/bad luck with hiring. Tony himself was struggling with that…

One could argue that Virginia would have had a similar record in the Big 12 during that span.

Potentially @haney . I guess what I’m saying is that I think the most likely scenario is that we end up with a Keatts, Moser, Brownell (35-60 KP type program) rather than a Brad Underwood, Shaka Smart, Scott Drew (10-30) type. It’s hard to fit it into those bubbles, I know.

Anyway, it’s impossible to know, but I’m just not confident. But it’s critical that we try anyway if the other option is Ron.

It’s unfortunate for Ron that his name is Ron right now. It’s just kind of a name that fits the profile of a guy who is down and out. Every time I see ā€˜Ron’ typed out on this board I just hear the Debbie Downer music.

(Apologies to all the Rons out there. Regular ones, Captains, Jeremies, etc.)

Moser finished ahead of Miller in the big 12 last year.

Also had a sweet 16 run at Loyola too

And outside Jeremiah Fears his talent has been okay. Oklahoma doesnt have a DMV or North Carolina to pull from. Texas kids stay in Texas for the most part

Hubert looks like he might implode again. No Miller for me.

Yeah, like once a decade you get a Trae Young or Blake Griffin or Stacey King growing up in Oklahoma. Or maybe you get lucky and Buddy Hield drops in from the Bahamas. But that’s not the most fertile recruiting area.

If Moser isn’t good enough then who is? We’d likely need to take a chance on someone at a much smaller school if Moser is considered not a good enough hire

I’m gonna say what we’re all thinking seeing these generous donations pile in for football… Man I hope those same checks come out around March of next year

I would be ok with Miller but expect him to go UNC if/when they call.

Eh, perhaps that’s part of the pitch. The ACC was a lot less competitive last year than the B12 (and SEC, this year).

Last year, the #46 team in the country probably would have done better than 8-10 in the ACC. I’d guess more like 11-9 or even 12-8 (and don’t bring up NC State, they were ranked way lower prior to their end of year rampage), which would have put them at 23-9, maybe? Or even 24-8? Which I think we would have been pretty happy with as a year 3 result.

Yeah just watching Moser you know he’s a good Xs and Os coach and Oklahoma fans do say the same (ā€œHe’s a miracle worker with the centers he hasā€ etc. etc.)

I have confidence, given he was able to land Jeremiah Fears and reclass him (just as one example), that he would be more willing to tap into the DMV/North Carolina Hoops scene and more willing to really use and leverage NIL and build better rosters than he current has PLUS also getting to compete in a conference that is nowhere near SEC or Big12 talent and depth wise.

No idea on ceiling and how flukey his sweet 16 and final 4 runs were, but I have unfounded confidence we would be a consistent top 6 team in the ACC under Moser (but again the ACC is dogshit so no idea how that translates to national scene, although Moser being a strong out of conference performer would help boost us even more).

I’m now on the Wes Miller train - just need an insane buyout if UNC comes calling.

I assume they’ve already found out whether Rick Carlisle wants the job right? Gotta ask anyway. I still lean toward giving preference to VA or UVA ties. They should already have determined if Mark Byington and Mike Rhoades are possibilities too. How much can we spend on a buyout?

I imagine Rhoades is ours if we want him
