Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don’t you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

My mistake. It’s not Forged in Fire; it’s Knife or Death, the spinoff series hosted by Bill Goldberg

I thought it was from Little House on the Prairie when Pa entered the log-splitting competition

Check in on funny story, from a draft podcast:

  • Odds are neither he nor Taran Armstrong become NBA players, but Taran has a better shot at it. Then one guy says he’d much prefer seeing Armstrong on G-league ignite because of his passing skills.

It was such an odd decision at the time and it continues to be an odd decision a year and a half later. I suppose it’s getting water on the bridge-ish, with Reece back this year, and Bliss looking like a good fit for us, but I think funny story is ultimately the better player. He really would’ve been a nice player here… Oh well… I make dumb decisions, too…

Isn’t he making like $500k/year or something? As an 18-year old I’d have been pretty willing to make dumb decisions if they were attached to that kind of salary.

Edit - I assume that offer is viewed with some regret at this point by Ignite, but maybe not? I have no idea what their numbers look like.

Google says $1.1 mn over two years, which is much more than he would have made over 4 years of NIL here, or most places.

But his NBA prospects currently seem bad enough that the overall value prop just may have been higher here. (factoring in degree, built in fanbase, ability to simmer for a few more years without constantly getting the thumbs down in terms of NBA likelihood, and of course, potential jump in draft stock after he won the natty with us)

Oh, well, sure. I mean, I think he’d have been great at UVA. And looking at it from his perspective, now that Ignite has proven to not go well for him, retroactively having gone to UVA probably looks pretty good. But as annoyed with him as I am, I can’t really blame him for taking the money at the time. He didn’t know Ignite was going to go badly at that point.

Which is something that doesn’t get talked about as much as it should. ā€œBetting on yourselfā€ is usually a sucker’s bet. Sure, we hear amazing stories of people who defied the odds and became stars. But the key point is they ā€œdefied the oddsā€, which means most people who make that bet wash out and become PE teachers and we never hear about them again.

Funny story…

Driver’s Ed or Health Ed or something similar that got shoehorned into PE during high school. Friend of mine gets into an argument with the teacher over his grade. Isn’t getting his way, eventually loses patience and in front of the class says ā€œwell you’re just a gym teacher.ā€

Coulda heard a pin drop for a split second. Pretty sure if our PE teacher wasn’t a law abiding citizen my friend would not be with us today.

Heh, I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being a PE teacher. I got along really well with my PE teacher in high school and a couple times when the rest of the class got busy with stuff she taught me to play Mumbly Peg. I thought that was pretty cool at the time (and still do) but I’m pretty sure school administration would not have been ok with it.

Just that if you’ve got serious NBA aspirations and you end up a PE teacher instead, things haven’t gone the way you hoped.

To be fair if you expect to be an NBA player and are anything else it could suck too

I realized I wasn’t gonna play in the NBA at about age 9 or so, and I’m STILL bitter so I can’t imagine how tough it is for kids with legit aspirations.

Younger sister of an old friend is 6’2ā€ and her husband is… I’m gonna guess 7’ but I’m not sure. My buddy is 6’9ā€ and his car is too cramped for her husband.

Anyway, they were apparently the USTA silver medalists in Pickleball for CA. They aren’t super athletic, but their wingspan is just absurd and I’m curious who beat them.
