Itâs called the âonce youâre in meaningful games, that tendency will be scouted and opposing coaches wonât guard you, and that will make your teammates worseâ stat.
Like Salt and Clark together in 2019
I havenât read through all this so I might be repeating things. But I donât know how relevant history is to todayâs environment in relation to freshman playing. Fewer are all over major college basketball because transfers donât need to sit.
Recreate this yearâs roster without the one-time waiver rule, you donât have Franklin or Gardner but probably still lose Morsell and Jabri. Murray or McCorkle would have been force fed playing regardless of performance, sorta like Morsellâs first year. And even though McKoy is likely still here, they wouldâve known from the start that they needed more offense in the frontcourt, which likely would have led to Milicic being forced in the same way.
Itâs apples to oranges
Yeah, I agree, but I think this is part of the frustration. We are playing transfers that are not contributing to NCAA tourney level hoops and are also creating an insurmountable barrier for younger guys to develop. It just seems less than ideal. Whoever made the analogy to the Indiana Pacers perma-8/9 seed kinda had a point⌠(obvious difference being our recruiting class coming in, rather than relying on the draft or convincing free agents to move to Indiana).
His job in the minutes he has gotten is literally to keep the ball moving and relieve Reece!! and or Kihei of having to have the ball so much. He is very capable there and you never see a player pass over him or look him off. He seems to have the defense down position wise. For me is an tad flipant to say anyone could do those things.
I would also like to see him say F it and make some plays but he has earned what hes getting so far and the rest will come. I dont see it as he is taking someones minutes who has proven to deserve them (not putting those words in your mouth but that just came to me)
All I can say is that heâs playing his roll very well. Even the championship team had some role players. Remember that? Lol
Championship!
If someone told you they climbed Everest, youâd question the route they took.
Iâm a firm believer that development is gained in practice and the off-season. Game reps basically catch you up to game speed and teach you how to stay focused in hostile environments.
Um Tony mostly scrapped playing salt and Clark together in the 2nd half of that season.
And it all worked out!
Agree on Tony leaving early but disagree on your post-TB prognosis. With our facilities and budget there is no reason we shouldnât rival the post-Ralph Holland and Jones era. The program is on much better financial and infrastructure footing than it was for the Gillen and Leitao days.
Heâs earned his minutes due to his defense, no doubt. Iâm not saying thatâs easily replaceable at all. Iâd probably drop dead on the court if I tried and my man would blow by me every single time down the court.
My only point is that for his role on offense only, anyone (even short old man me) could fill his role on offense (of receiving a pass on the perimeter and passing it back to where it came from) and not have a measurable negative impact. The immeasurable negative impact on my teammates of my defender not having to guard me is still there though. So is that worse than an occasional turnover while trying to make a play? At least now my man has to guard me instead of helping anywhere else all the time.
Oh we agree on that for sure. You have to learn to be a threat in different ways. I know its player A or B that we talk about; I just think that Malachi, when he has been called on, has done EXACTLY what was expected. And thats how you stay on the court. I want us as fans to lift ALL these guys up. After all, we literally have no control of who plays
As @chavlicek15 said before and so many of yall here, I agree you gotta find guys some minutes here or there WHEN its a real game. There is nothing like being in a real game when the real game is going on
Taking Carson out after making a nice jumper and in the flow only because he made one (pretty bad turnover) is a coaching personell mistake in my opinion. I bet TB would agree looking back as we were slaughtered anyway
Go Hoos!
For those who mention Taineâs defense as the reason - even though offensively he has produced at a rate not matched by anyone not named Gardner. Here are his plus minus numbers in games and how they compare to the team. Methinks some people think he is worse on defense than he actually is. And he has proven in actual non garbage minutes his offense usually outweighs the perception of his defense.
Iowa - UVA was -1 and he was +2
Pitt - Uva was +1 and he was +6
JMU - UVA was -3 and Taine was -7 ⌠he played poorly
FDU - UVA was +33 and Taine was +4 in garbage time
Clemson - UVA was -17 and Taine was -2
at Syracuse - UVA was +5 and Taine was -13
at UNC - UVA was -17 and Taine was -5
at NC State - UVA was -14 and Taine was +4
You may wonder which guys in the rotation consistently outperform the team plus minus and which guys consistently underperform it?
Or which guys are top 3 on the team the most games?
I think CTB just dislikes the internet and him not playing them is the ultimate troll job
Tbh, this is a relief. I thought it was me specifically.
Oh itâs especially you. And then the rest of the internet.
Edit: But I got love for ya.
I may have stumbled across the reason the Mâs donât play while ruminating on it. I remember in the off season how Tony did not want any transfer signing to threaten his incoming class. So heâs so protective of them that he didnât want the Mâs to get much better this year so as to make it easier for the new guys to play more next year.
Occamâs Razor - maybe they just arenât good enough?
In practice right?
