I usually watch a few games in the off-season from the previous season to get a feel for what really was going on. Bad decision to watch the track and field world championships first and then watch our team play. Kind of like eating gourmet chocolate cake and then taking a swig of lemonade… Kinda left a sour taste in my mouth lol.
I will say Cafaro had a few decent moments in the Virginia Tech game at home

Caffaro can be a useful piece, in certain moments, just have to use him sporadically. Waardenburg? No. Traditional center? Yeah, probably.

He should sporadically play when Kadin and Isaac T have fouled out

Concur… was trying not talk about all the Franklin airballs … :joy::cry:
Just hard to be good when a team is short unathletic and can’t shoot.
I really don’t think that Gardner and Shedrick are playable together for much at all unless Shedrick is allowed to shoot mid range as well.
Or unless Gardner shows consistent enough three point range that opponents actually guard him out there.
I like Traudt Shedrick and BVP mostly at the four and five actually

I agree with this, though it is kinda funny that Waardenburg didn’t hit a single 3 (and only scored 12 total pts) in two games against UVA last year. No idea how often he and Papi were matched up, but Papi did play 23 mins in the first game, only 10 in the second game

Didn’t know where this post belonged, so I went for an old standby thread.

Field of 68 did a top 25 players of the last 10 years, and they’ve now announced all 25, and they left out Brogdon.

They include him in the list of ā€œothers considered.ā€ It’s hard to get upset he didn’t make top 15 or so. He never won national player of the year, and he never went to a final 4, and the guys in that list generally did one or the other, if not both. Or were Trae Young.

But if you look at 21-25, Malc has a case over all those guys:

  • Oladipo - also never went to the final 4 (or even elite 8). Only chit is one rando POTY (Sporting News).
  • Barrett - this is the one that really pisses me off. RJ never went to the final 4, never won a POTY, and wasn’t even the best player on his team. And only one season.
  • Bacot - meh, at least he led his team to a final 4. He was a decent, but not terribly good player until this past year. Recency bias.
  • Vanvleet - He was a rotation guy on their final 4 team, but I don’t think that lifts him above Brogs.
  • Paolo - ??? Third-team all American, not even ACC POTY. Not much of a defender. :man_shrugging:

Yeah, I was debating with a friend. It’s a pretty terrible list from 15 on. Brogdon was multiple year All-American.

I’d argue Kyle Guy is one of the top 25 as well (All-American multiple times (maybe 2nd or 3rd team), MOP, National Champion) - I know folks love Ty and Dre on this site (and they should) but Guy was the more decorated college player.

I also think the list has massive recency bias at the end.

That list has Grayson Allen at 18 despite him being at best the 3rd best player on his team for 3/4 seasons. Having him above Brogdon is hilarious.

I would argue he’s only more decorated bc he was more famous (higher ranked HS recruit, man-bun, vocal on twitter, etc.). Ty was better than Kyle. Maybe that’s a hot take tho.

not hot at all. Is the right take.

@Foresthoo quick thoughts on the tangent issue, and then I’ll leave it alone.

  • I really appreciate all the insider stuff you, H&T, and others bring to the board. It’s great stuff and tbh the reason I started coming here.
  • I try to post value add stuff when I find it, but at least wrt recruiting it’s pretty few and far between
  • I clearly have pet peeve Tony issues that I like to discuss and raise and banter about when they come up.
  • the tough question is what to do when the tangent comes up: Papi raises McKoy as part of a recruiting post, in a way I (and others) wanted to discuss.
  • is the answer on that point: alway go open a new thread or bring to an on topic thread?
  • I think that sounds reasonable but is often not pragmatic.
  • I’ve tried to keep the intel threads free of too much of my banter, esp. in their early days. I will keep trying to do that.

Anyway, go hoos. I enjoy the banter here and while I get prickly, I think it’s a nice place to talk uva hoops and don’t want to muck with that just because I’m an argumentative contrarian.

Robert Frost had an opinion on tangents sorta

As John Starks said, you miss all the tangents you don’t take.

Perhaps we should lobby for the folks that should get moderator status… seriously, if two or three are chosen, then the tangents can be quickly dealt with through splits/merges/new topics/deletions, etc. HGN is too busy to keep up w/ it all.

@DFresh… you have moderator rights… you gotta get smart on the merge/split functions… I taught @HoozGotNext how to do it last year after I read the Discourse administrator manual.

  • Does Fresh have any chance at learning splits and mergers?
  • NO!!

This would end, and begin, badly. I personally love when HGN just shuts the mfing topic down with a Lock!

Considering you still haven’t learned the poll thing… ummm… hahaha!

… but on the poll thing… when you create one, hit this button before you start building it…

… you will then get this screen…

Which should seriously help you out making much better polls…
