Come on… LRA is like a fraternity/sorority… you just summed up what everyone thinks about everyone else as we’re like brothers & sisters here… unless they are in a different fraternity/sorority on the other side of Beta Bridge… f*&^ those dudes. LOL!

Just my opinion, and I appreciate the friendly discourse… All of these threads are UVa-centric and apt to encourage all manner of tangential discussions to the thread topic. But the VIP recruiting thread, almost by definition, is intended to be dense and focused in recruiting discussion. Comparing a recruit to McKoy or any other player fits the pattern, but a discussion on McKoy’s usage while at UVa is definitely getting off topic (not to mention having been litigated here a million times). Best, though, when we self regulate to keep on topic and keep the VIP thread rich in material discussion. Sometimes I lose track of what thread I’m in and make mostly unrelated comments, so I’m guilty as well.

Here are the top 10 Replies Posted members in the last year… ignore me at the top as it always puts the user reviewing as the top (I’m really #17)… my biggest question on this list is what the heck @haney was doing for that one day last year?

… but seriously, it seems like a good list of those who could be mod candidates outside of HGN & DFresh…

Oh god, I don’t know how I feel about seeing my stats. Maybe I have a problem.

Lol! I think one day I was like, I’ll read a book … but then I must’ve wondered what folks were saying about UVa hoops…

Re: NIL and portal, carryover from Intel thread:

@bdhammond28 said:

Guys going into the portal looking for NIL weren’t coming to UVA before anyway. They were getting money under the table. We’ve always feasted on the guys who already lost the excitement for that and usually wanted to play at a higher stage(Hauser, Gardner, Vander Plas, Key) and develop defensively to play in the NBA(Murphy). I think the Murphy success in particular should be a HUGE asset in recruiting transfers going forward.

A few thoughts on this:

  • IMO, if you have a black market that goes ā€œlegitā€, the number of people willing to participate in the market goes up quite a bit. I suspect there are plenty of examples (alcohol after Prohibition? Cannabis after states legalized?).
  • So yes, there were willing payors and payees pre-NIL, but now there are significantly more.
  • So I think it’s an open question as to whether the ability to make $$ (and yes, make even more in the NBA) would’ve affected the decision of guys like Murphy, Hauser, and Key.
  • If you compare our pre-NIL/portal transfers it’s guys like the three noted above (2 of 3 top 100, 2 of 3 with NBA roster spots a year into their NBA career–and maybe 3 by the end of the year) vs. our post-NIL guys: Armaan, Jayden, BVP (0 of 3 top 100, 0 of 3 with realistic NBA hopes in the near term).
  • Q: But Haney, isn’t your data on the ā€œpreā€ guys cherry picked? A: Yes, but only a little. Nigel Johnson happened, too, but he was before those three.
  • Q: But Haney, isn’t our ā€œpostā€ NIL data really limited? A: It’s limited, but that’s the nature of looking at these things in real time.
  • Q: Couldn’t it get better? A: Yes, of course, that’s how this tangent started. I said I hope transfer recruiting gets better, and others responded that it’s already fine.
  • It’s absolutely been fine. Fine puts you in the NIT…
  • How good is BVP? How much does he contribute to winning hoops? Stay tuned. I think there’s an optimistic case for BVP. There’s also a pessimistic one, too.

I think we disagree, but that’s a fair counter argument. I think there’s just so little evidence so far that either of us could be right, we just don’t know right now. On the topic of our recruiting: I think that recruiting has been good or horrible depending on the year.
ā€˜16- Amazing
ā€˜17- Horrible- Couldn’t get anyone post ā€˜16. Clearly wasn’t a good class on paper but seemed like there was an explanation at least.
ā€˜18- Poor- Couldn’t get much post ā€˜16. Clearly wasn’t a good class on paper again…. Was definitely a bummer and most frustrating one for me because I think blaming ā€˜16 guys blocking play time was fair in ā€˜17. In ā€˜18 it seemed like a justification and a major stretch.
ā€˜19- Poor- Seemed good on paper but 2/3 didn’t pan out.
ā€˜20- Poor- Seemed good but on paper but 2/3 didn’t pan out.
ā€˜21- TBD, but seems horrible. I bet Murray gets passed and transfers this year.
ā€˜22- TBD, but on paper really good.
ā€˜23- TBD, I’m hopeful we can make it a good complementary class to ā€˜22. Buchanan, hopefully Gertrude, and either Power or higher level PG makes it a success. All 4 and it is similar to ā€˜22 and seems like a home run.

I’m mostly optimistic, and I understand having lower years due to a big class the year before, but a 2 year gap of not getting high level talent in ā€˜17 and especially ā€˜18 was pretty inexcusable in my opinion. It gave ā€˜19 and ā€˜20 little margin for error, and we got what looked good on paper but didn’t pan out on the court. Because we missed ā€˜18 in particular it made ā€˜19 and ā€˜20 being home runs crucial, and it flopped. ā€˜21 was more excusable in my book because the verdict was still out on ā€˜19 and ā€˜20 so there wasn’t super obvious PT.

2018 wasn’t inexcusable. People didn’t want to visit Charlottesville after that summer.

I worked at a summer camp and after our summer was over JMU rented our camp grounds for their Camp Kessem program. They were supposed to have had like 40 kids. Only 6 showed up. People werent sending their kids to Cville after that summer (this was mid august). Other camps in the area were having the same issues around that time and for a short while afterwards. Of course other kids used that also as an excuse not to visit (Jalen Smith was never coming here regardless).

Also can we talk about the bad timing of recruiting a kid named David Duke at the same time? LMAO

That and also Jared Butler’s dad.

Again, I’m relatively optimistic…. I mean I see how that was an obstacle and negatively affected things… with that being said we needed to have that class be better than it was, and we didn’t deliver. but I’m getting kind of tired of the countless excuses as to why it’s not our fault we got like 3 ACC level players from HS recruiting over the course of 5 classes.

Most because we had the 2016 kids who were all good multiyear players who eventually won a natty. Hard to earn playing time.

I understand that and don’t disagree. But that hasn’t stopped Nova. Also we offered like a million PG’s in that class with a spot to start and move Jerome off ball and didn’t get any until Kihei. I love Kihei, but it should’ve been an easier sell.

Also Kody and Papi were ACC level players. Role players. Never meant to be stars. Don’t let the group think make you think they were D3 players LOL

Kody had heart issues. Papi has had multiple injuries. Baddochi had health issues. They just happen to be foreign so it’s a ā€œforeign players such hereā€. Taine idk but it was only his first year. And worst comes to worse we need kids in the 8-13 spots on the roster

I agree with Papi as a role player. He just has been forced to do too much. Im hopeful that changes this year. In regards to Kody…… I don’t believe he was a real ACC player. But that’s not super important now. Either way, im sure we all hoped for better.

Yeah I think it can be chalked up to poor execution on the trail plus some bad luck. No doubt.
