šŸ™„ No Holds Barred Thread - A Haney/DavetheWave Production

Haney:
Yeah, I tend to think the rebounding answer is fairly simple – in general, we are relatively unathletic and relatively short, and also never focus on OR%. And we are not making up for those deficits with amazing skill, or hustle, or effort.

You know what’s weird and totally crazy?
When we were behind and actually went after offensive boards - we put Miami on tilt on the boards for a decent stretch. Had 11 offensive rebounds for the game

Combining a recent bugaboo of mine (reporters trying to get Tony to reveal a bit more) with a permanent bugaboo of mine (minimize redshirts), Tony indicated the Traudt and Bond RSs were month-to-month decisions. Would be nice if someone asked how the monthly review went / is going.

I genuinely don’t get why Bond is redshirting. Traudt too but I guess that was his call but we could definitely use him

This was always a strange one. I recall HGN saying several times prior that Dunn was more likely to redshirt based on where the players were but that Dunn also did the prep year and so that made him less likely to redshirt. @rushdacote noted on the Italy trip that Dunn has high potential but Bond was the better player right now and I think I and maybe others as well who watched the scrimmage came to that same conclusion (Bond just looked way more comfortable on the floor than Dunn and was impacting the game in other ways. But Dunn has the higher offensive ceiling). WIth Bond the redshirt was upfront since the beginning of his recruitment I believe.

Dunn - Danny Green
Bond - Matisse Thybulle

Putting aside my own RS thoughts, if you were going to RS one of Bond or Dunn, Bond makes a bit more sense given relative ages (I believe Bond is 18, right?) and given that for his potential role, he might need to add some strength / physicality.

Now putting my own RS thoughts back into my head, it would have been nice to have them both. One thing the games so far have taught me, is that without a healthy Reece, there’s no one on this team (through 10 spots or so) that needs to be out there 35+ minutes for us to be succesful, and there’s nobody on this team that couldn’t help out in a pinch with a slightly different skillset. Xavier Venom (Mr. Cuts) said something in the Houston recap about this being a year where the staff needs to find the right rotation from game-to-game, which IMO seems like the perfect environment to work through a lot of different guys / rotations.

I personally think what if. If we had Bond or Dunn playing more, Reece wouldn’t have needed to spend so much time guarding Jett in the Michigan game.

And he wasn’t doing a particularly good job of it, anyway.

My attempt:
Dunn - Jerami Grant
Bond - Jae Crowder

I’m having a hard time getting a feel for who Dunn will be as a player, not just this year, but in future years. He’s leaned in so hard (in a really good way) into his role this year as this kinetic energy guy who is giving great effort constantly, and will either set screens if he needs to or run around them if he needs to, but is pretty low usage. But what does starter Dunn look like to you all? Is it this year’s role just more and better? Or is he doing different stuff that he isn’t do now (either because he can’t yet or he’s not be asked to do so)?

My questions are mostly around him on offense, because his defensive role seems pretty clarified already as a guard-everyone type of player.

Edit: wrote this before seeing the comps being made already.

Was gonna say Crowder is a such a big dude compared to Bond, but he was 6-5 210 at JUCO, and Bond is 6-5 200 per UVa, so not too far off…

Great question. Depends a lot on if he can get the shot back. He has some slashing skills, but pretty reticent to deploy them for the most part.

It sounded like Bond’s redshirt was more Tony’s idea than Bond’s (we know the opposite is true for Traudt). If Tony thinks Bond isn’t ready, then it’s probably safe to say that redshirt or not, the idea he would even get minutes this season (outside of garbage time) is wishful thinking.

I really, really wish these guys could play 4 games or something and keep their redshirt, if only so that us fans could see why they’re on the bench.

For some reason I just have a feeling that in 2-3 years we are gonna be like ā€œMan was redshirting Leon Bond a great moveā€. Maybe for TB it was Dunn or Leon to wait (redshirt) and for whatever their reasons it is Bond.

Define ā€œweā€ :joy:

More earnestly, as I’ve said, the case for Bond redshirting makes some sense, for those whom redshirting makes general sense

Hadn’t seen anyone else really discuss the last 75 seconds of the Miami game …
So many times in our past we’ve had the lead and other teams have pressed with success and gotten the games nervous.
We were able to do it to Miami with great effect …
We should pressure more like that periodically in games to make opponents uncomfortable.
Also when we actually tried to get some offensive rebounds with 4 guys - we did. Inconceivable!

Reminded me of the London Parrentes years. Dude loved playing from behind and was a master at it

The situation decided it for us really. But it’s like asking a conservative football coach to go for it every time on fourth down and less than three yards. The metrics might bear that out, but he’s never gonna do it.

No I’m just asking him to go for it on 4th and less than 5 from the opponents 37
