Yeah, that looked like a clean block on Filipowski.
Itās like a reverse trillion. Or maybe inverted trillion.
Millenial stat line⦠all about the millenial. Hahaha!
Reminded by my post in the FSU thread, this was a fun version of Back Pages from Bobfest. This concert was notable for (1) Sinead OāConnorās commentary on her Catholic upbringing, and (2) the Boomer musicians basically deciding āOk, we did it! We did our best work. Letās agree to only embarrass ourselves from here on out!ā
Just saw this on the VT board⦠one their posterās 9-y/o old daughter had an emergency brain tumor removed after a random seizure in school a few days ago⦠this scares the crap out of me with three kids of my ownā¦
Here is the GoFundMe if interestedā¦
Random question⦠when I was on Active Duty and salespeople would come to try and sell us stuff⦠I would gravitate to those who were in better shape as I think there is an unconscious bias that out of shape folks didnāt get the military⦠who knows⦠soā¦
- More than an in-shape refereeā¦
- The same⦠who cares what fitness level they are in?
- Less than an in-shape refereeā¦
Maybe this is a question for @DavetheWave but what are the fitness test like for refs? I know in rugby in addition to proving game knowledge etc. There are fitness standards that have to be passed to get certified at different levels. Obviously the higher the level the higher the fitness levels. Refs are subjected to the same annual Bronco test most players are.
Is basketball the same? Is it one standardized union that could even implement that?
Related to this, but Iām not a big fan of the new muscle shirts that refs wear, or Lee Cassell ordering one that is two sizes too small. We used to accuse one of my workout warrior buddies of ordering his shirts from Gap Kids.
The European Soccer referees all have to pass the following bleep test every year. Itās the same test the military, police and firefighters have to passā¦
Iāve taken it before and it kicks your ass more than you thinkā¦
EDIT: I guess I was wrong on the exact test⦠but itās still something that tests endurance and fitnessā¦
Hilarious - we had a couple of dudes who when reffing always wore schmediums to show off the muscles.
Similar I just looked up the numbers for USA rugby refs. Itās the Y0-yo not the bronco but the numbers are
- ELITE: 18.5
- NATIONAL PANEL: 18
- B PANEL: 18
- C1: 17
Those are pretty legit numbers for comparison Here are the standards I use for a standard college team
Front Row ā Level 15
2nd Row ā Level 16
Back Row ā Level 17
Backs ā Level 18
If youāve seen Jamie Luckie try to run up and down the court you would know that there is no fitness test.
There is currently zero fitness test for high school or college basketball officiating ⦠none for football either.
If I were to suggest what to watch for ⦠itās guys that are in shape but arenāt overly muscular ⦠I know itās a stereotype ⦠but most guys I know or have known or worked with that were overly muscular - also actually werenāt in great cardio shape ⦠it also seemed to be a compensation for lack of play calling ability ā¦
Great example in the NBA is Zach Zarba is in great shape but not really muscular ⦠he is widely considered a top 3 play caller.
Another good one is James Capers and Justin Van Duyne.
On the bad side is Marc Davis who is a bad play caller⦠like really bad⦠did I say bad?
All of that tracks.
I did not think there were any standards but wasnāt sure.
Also traditionally over developed body guys arenāt the best in cardio, that has changed a bit with the rise of crossfit bros. But not sure how many of them are moving over to be refs.
Hereās a link to an article that has a bunch of coachās opinions about a bunch of officials ā¦
In my opinion this is what how you want to be thought of:
Doug Sirmons
āYou know heās an elite official. You just know you donāt test him. Heās a serious guy. And heās really good. Anytime Iāve been like, I wasnāt sure about that, you catch the tape and say, heās right most of the time, you leave him alone. You tell your players, that guy is working in the Final Four, and donāt question him.ā
āReally focused. Steady. Knows his stuff. He does a great job, in my opinion, of managing the game.ā
āYou can just tell it really matters. He wants to get every play right.ā
Itās interesting in rugby one of the officials long thought to be the best is a guy named Nigel Owens who recently retired a few years ago. Overall he was solid, but he really made a name for himself due to some of the quippy remarks that he would make throughout the game and some of the banter heād have with the players. Refs are micād in rugby so it was all picked up.
Personally the more he spoke the less I liked him. I always felt the best officials are the ones where I donāt know they name. They manage the game, make the right calls and get in and out allowing the play to shine and not themselves. Even if they are making good calls if the spotlight is on them, they have lost their purpose IMO.
If the refās out of shape, Iām worried heāll be more inclined to blow a whistle just because he needs a breather.
This is actually factually true ⦠heard it in the locker room more than onceā¦
