It was a great place to play IM softball, especially if you were a lefthanded power hitter. Kevin Morgan, the gigantic tailback on the football team, used to launch missiles into Fiji’s front yard from the opposite side of Mad Bowl.
I think it’s concentrated among the houses and apartments on the S-curve. My buddy had an apartment on wertland my second year. Apparently someone threw a chair off the neighboring apartment and almost paralyzed someone. Was a bit of a bummer
It was called “Easters”…and it was effing amazing!
Yeah Easter’s died a long time ago, then they tried to replace it with school sanctioned events but those got too wild.
But I’m sure after several generations, students have learned their lesson and won’t get too boozy anymore, no?

Yeah those were fun. The spring I was admitted (ie, before my first year fall) I went down on a Saturday and saw Better Than Ezra there - also hit up KAs crawfish party. Perfect spring day and I knew I had made a great decision to matriculate
Maybe they use mad bowl more now, it was a persistent mud pit when I was there but then they renovated it in the mid/late 2000s
Interesting. How did they renovate it to avoid the mudpit? More concrete or Cobblestones etc? lol!
ha nice
Someone Tell him to sneak some practice footage!!!
I was there in the early/mid 2010’s and it always had people there throwing a frisby or playing with dogs when I was in school. Also used by the rugby teams and for philanthropic sports tournaments. Think the days of official UVA programming happening in Mad Bowl are over though.
First week of class in fall 1996. Storm came through Thursday night and there was no power Friday morning. Classes were canceled and I got out of a Latin quiz that I didn’t bother to study for (great start to my first year).
Power came on later that day. We didn’t make it over to Mad Bowl. We drank and played FIFA on Sega Genesis all day instead.
I remember that as well… it was my first year as well. Perhaps we high fived sliding down the hills!
Apparently using AAU cameras
Hey, it wasn’t THAT long ago! My first year was the first without an Easters—82-83.
On a serious note, there was a terrible accident during fraternity rush that fall involving a Uhaul trailer hauling rushees and a keg. Dean of Students Canevari shut down Easters shortly after.
However, the decision had been in the works for a while before that, as the bacchanalia had been getting out of hand for a while.
If you look somewhere in the upper left, that’s me. You may not be able to see me at first, but squint.
If I may proceed to ask some dumb questions:
-
for AAU events, is there any quality video taken for use by college coaches for scouting? Not just highlights but full games. Seems like that would be in the best interests of the kids playing. And if “yes” how is it distributed? Colleges can purchase it perhaps?
-
Is there any chance that when we hear that Tony is working his “contacts” that it isn’t a foreign player? Are there kids that didn’t play AAU ball for one reason or another that are out there that are worth a HM scholarship?
-
What is it that a coach can see in person that he can’t see from full game film in basketball? As long as the camera has a broad angle you can see what everyone on the court is doing.
