🩼 Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

Wow great names. Now that is real college basketball there

Tony Campbell got some good years with the Lakers, I think

Edit: NBA from 84-94 but only 1 with my Lakers

Granville Waiters! He was Perry Ellis before there was a Perry Ellis.

When I lived in U-Heights my fourth year, we had a cheap cable system (free with our rent, somehow) that included ESPN, which showed all the NCAA games that CBS didn’t – on tape delay. All night, all morning. We barely slept. At 4 a.m., we’d be watching teams like Weber State and Robert Morris.

We even left our door open, so even if we were (briefly) asleep, our friends would wander in and catch a game. I’d wake up to go to the bathroom and there’d be a half-dozen people in my living room trying to figure out what LaSalle’s nickname was, or where Morehead State was located.

I remember getting back from Charlottesville after the Ohio State game to discover that ESPN was showing a replay of the game. Which I watched. Then, they showed it again (can’t remember when, but it was within 24 hours of the game), and I watched it again. Which was a joy, because VCRs at that time were $1K+, and weren’t part of my budget (T-120 tapes were $25). Times change.

Or, I could be misremembering. It has been forty years plus. It might have been the UVa-UNC game (1981) in which Virginia came back from a half time deficit, led in the surge by Lee Raker and Othell Wilson, to defeat Carolina. I was in my seat for the game, drove back to Richmond to see that ESPN was replaying it (Saturday night), and then they showed the game again on Sunday morning. Good times and undefeated!

Should we reminisce about old UConn runs or nah?

UCONN has had 2 of the more impressive runs I’ve seen when Walker and Napier put them on their backs for 5 weeks.

My favorite was 99. Beat Duke and won me a pool.

Were there any runs that didn’t eventually reveal NCAA violations that precipitated sanctions?

Great question that 99 run with Okafor was legit right? Thought the allegations came in the 2k

I think Okafor was the 2004 title team. El-Amin and Hamilton were ā€˜99.

You’re right i forgot about El-Amin. Hated that kid

Really?

Not sure what it was about El-Amin…maybe that we were so bad that era…but he was one of my favorite college players of that time. Maybe because he just didn’t look the part (kind of short and stocky), but could carve you up.

I think that’s what I hated about it. Remember that same yr playing AAU and we played a team with. Guard like him and our coach going off about letting him go off

I always said he was like the 40 year old, a little out-of-shape guy at the playground who didn’t look like he could play, but you couldn’t stop

That’s exactly what he was

Things I would miss if I were still in Charlottesville:
The rows of pines behind either side of Scott Stadium.
The Mouse Trap.
The Glass Hat.
Is College Inn still there? Even if it is, I imagine that Dot (Thorpe?) isn’t. I would definitely miss her.
The UD and Ethel.
I’d miss the Physics Field and the Gilmer Field, although the Physics Field was gone before I took my degree.
I might miss Lupo’s, but I’m unsure.
The Prism Coffee House (is it still there?) where EmmyLou Harris used to perform occasionally (before she made it big).
Parking. You could park almost anywhere in Charlottesville, for free, when I was a student.
The pool hall at The Corner.
Lambeth Field.
The ā€œHe Lives!ā€ annotations beside the Z symbols. (It was a 1970 thing. You had to be there.)

What I find mildly disturbing is that folks here are missing things which are now gone, but had yet to be when I was there. This getting old crap isn’t for sissies!

'71 and '75 grad here. I enjoyed your compliation. Is the Castle still functional in the bottom of Bonnycastle?

I don’t know about The Castle. Someone who was there later than I will have to answer that. FWIW, I barely made it through The Trial.
